The Western Horizon
Steinunn Gunnlaugsdóttir
17. 01. – 01.03. 2025

Gallery Gudmundsdottir is proud to present The Western Horizon, the first solo exhibition by Steinunn Gunnlaugsdóttir at the gallery. This exhibition brings together a collection of recent and new works that Gunnlaugsdóttir describes as a “still life of Western culture,” offering an exploration of contemporary cultural narratives and the tensions that define them.

The exhibition features three large-scale works that are both interconnected and distinct, each challenging perceptions of cultural symbols and time as well as their associated meanings. Her works invite reflection and dialogue, dissecting the layers of Western identity and its historically complicated relationship with the rest of the globe.

Born in Iceland in 1983, Steinunn Gunnlaugsdóttir is a visual artist whose multidisciplinary practice encompasses sculpture, video, sound, and installation. After earning her BFA from the Iceland University of the Arts in 2008, she participated in the prestigious HWP Art Program at Ashkal Alwan in Beirut, Lebanon (2013–2014). She was nominated as Iceland’s “Artist of the Year” in 2018 and received the Richard Serra Fund Award in 2021 for her outstanding contributions to sculpture.

At the core of Steinunn’s work lies an exploration of the human existential struggle—how individuals confront, resist, or surrender to the material and intangible structures shaping their being. Her practice examines the tension between autonomy and control, offering a poignant commentary on the human condition within societal frameworks.

Björg Þorsteinsdóttir (1940–2019) was an Icelandic artist who worked in painting, drawing, watercolour, and printmaking from the 1960s until her passing in 2019. Known as one of the leading figures in Icelandic printmaking, she exhibited widely, with her first solo show held at Unuhús, Reykjavík in 1971.

Throughout her career, Björg's work was selected for exhibitions both locally and internationally, with her pieces held in major collections in Iceland and across the globe, such as at the Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris, Musée des Beaux-Arts in Caen, Museo Nacional de Grabado Contemporáneo in Madrid, Museum of Contemporary Art in Skopje, Museum of Art in Poland, and Museum of Universal Graphics in Egypt.

Her excellence in etching earned her numerous accolades, including awards at international print exhibitions in Entrevaux, France (1970), Madrid, Spain (1976), and for her watercolours at an international festival in Plunge, Lithuania (2004). Additionally, she was recognized with a French government grant from 1971–1973 and was a resident artist at the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris, Villa Arson in Nice, France, Ragdale Foundation in Lake Forest, USA, and Skandinavisk Forenings Kunstnerkollegium in Rome, Italy.

Educated at the Icelandic College of Arts and Crafts, where she graduated in 1964, Björg furthered her studies at the Staatliche Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Stuttgart and the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris. She also honed her etching skills under the mentorship of S.W. Hayter at Atelier 17 in Paris.

In addition to her contributions to art, Björg played an active role in the Icelandic art scene, serving on the boards of the Icelandic Printmakers Association and the Association of Icelandic Visual Artists. She also contributed to the management of cultural institutions, directing Ásgrímur Jónsson's Museum (1980–1984) and teaching at both the Icelandic College of Arts and Crafts and the Reykjavík School of Visual Art.

Now is the last week of the exhibition Colossus by Anna Sigmond Gudmundsdottir.

The title honors the first programmable electronic digital computer, developed in 1940’s. This choice reflects the relationship between human creativity and the precision of programming. In her works, this connection manifests in her meticulous attention to line work. Each line in her expansive pieces is painted freehand with a precision that evokes the calculated rigor of a machine, yet retains the expressive touch of the human hand. Through this, Gudmundsdottir explores the dynamic relationship between manmade creativity and digital precision, blurring the boundaries between organic artistry and the mechanical logic of computation.

Sigmond Gudmundsdottir’s work is defined by contrasts. Chaotic beginnings on the canvas—liquid paint flowing freely—are shaped by monumental, calming lines. Her art blends physicality with contemplation, drawing inspiration from lines found in both nature and the built environment: tracks in old asphalt, furrows in spring soil, and digital remnants in forgotten spaces. The lines on her canvases create shapes that seem to materialize and dissolve, shifting between foreground and background. This interaction results in a visual experience that captures the tension between order and disorder, reflecting the constant push and pull of life.
Opening hours 13 - 18, Tuesdays to Saturdays.

"Colossus," examines how digitalization shapes our imagination and our perception of painting as an authentic object in a transient information culture. Her recent works, with a more figurative approach, place bodies in landscapes where interiors, objects, and animals move like shadows—disconnected yet connected, evoking a sense of vulnerability and confrontation.

Sigmond Gudmundsdottir underscores the continued relevance of painting in the digital age. She contrasts the tactile, concrete nature of painting with the transient digital world, emphasizing the authentic presence of the physical act of creation

Your Feelings Matter

06.06. – 20.07.2024

“Your Feelings Matter" invites us to delve into the philosophical undercurrents of everyday objects. Through installations and sensory experiences, the exhibition explores chewing gum—a symbol of perfect abstract form. It is not rigid or fixed but dynamic and evolving, much like our thoughts and emotions.

Within Gallery Gudmundsdottir, "Your Feelings Matter" transcends conventional perception, unearthing unspoken expressions of our collective consciousness. Suggesting contemplation of the timeless vibrations that animate both the living and the inanimate, weaving new narratives of connection and belonging.

Through the artist’s exploration of chewing gum as a metaphorical medium, Katrín Inga prompts us to reconsider our relationship with the world. "Your Feelings Matter" proposes novel patterns for reimagining our place within existence. With each chew, each moment of reflection, we are reminded of the profound interconnectedness of all things and the infinite possibilities within the mundane.

“You matter. Your vote matters. Your impact on the whole is undeniable. The whole is created by you. The truth is: many small things come together to form one big thing. It is a fact. You are the whole. A seemingly simple thought. But it's not such a simple feeling. Your inner world echoes outward, affecting the entirety. It is scary. It is power.“

Reeling of Disbelief
by Ivy Lee
opens 23 of April 18 - 21h
at Gallery Gudmundsdottir
curated by Patricia Bondesson Kavanagh

In escalation, at strange elevations, the work of Ivy Lee deals with the mysterious nature of systems and the systems we
transpose onto mystery.
The solo exhibition Reeling of Disbelief at Gallery Gudmundsdottir unearths from the air the unarticulated expressions of our planet, which in human language are reduced to ‘weather’. Investigating and unraveling the philosophical and physical tools conceived by our species to make-human such elemental forces, it is an unweaving of the narrative tapestries that govern how we perceive reality.

Through the eye of this needle, Reeling of Disbelief spins upon a spindle new threads for being with the world. It looks beyond the anthropocentric instruments of measure toward the timeless primordial vibrations which, moving living and non-living matter alike, give voice even to the mouthless.

For her second presentation at the gallery, Ivy Lee brings together a suite of works which, across multiple mediums, propose novel patterns for restitching ourselves back into the frayed fabric of the Earth.
