Countdown to the first institutional solo exhibition in Germany of the Net Art pioneers YOUNG-HAE CHANG HEAVY INDUSTRIES, an art duo consisting of Young-Hae Chang and Marc Voge. The exhibition PLEASE MISTAKE ME FOR NOBODY brings together works from 2000 to 2020 that revolve around the theme of paranoia. Most of the works on display were translated specifically for this exhibition into German for the first time. All of the show’s pieces feature the artists’s original music whose rhythm forms an essential element of the works.
_
Since its inception in the late 1990s, YHCHI has developed a distinctive style through its negotiation of cultural identity, material inequalities, (police) violence, the confluence of fact and fiction, and geo-political realities, including the division of Korea. The works of the art duo are characterized by a high degree of abstraction that simultaneously constitutes its signature: YHCHI’s wide-ranging themes and interests are expressed almost exclusively through black writing on a white background. The text is synchronized to music that is often self-composed, building up sentence by sentence, word by word, or letter by letter.

The work of Michel Majerus (*1967 in Esch-sur-Alzette / Luxembourg, † 2002 in Niederanven / Luxembourg) negotiates social paradigms that unfolded in the 1990s and continue to influence us today: the start of the virtual age with the increasing presence of computers and the internet, the spread of mass media, the world of advertising, and pop and youth culture.
_
Majerus‘s work reveals a non-hierarchical and discursive understanding of the image, in which quotations, seriality, and temporality play a central role, blurring the boundaries between the art world and everyday life. With his practice of sampling existing images, Majerus challenged both the inflation of artistic expression in art history and traditional notions of what constitutes the value of an image.
_
From Dec 17, n.b.k. highlights Michel Majerus’s installations as a central means of expression in his practice, presenting an extensive video installation, key wall works and spatial designs, as well as sculptural models conceived for his site-specific, large-scale projects.

Spatial interventions are one of the most significant elements in the work of Michel Majerus. Alluding to art movements such as Pop and Minimal Art, his ensembles enable viewers to become part of an experimental, experiential arrangement.

Now on our website: Aristide Antonas and Adam Szymczyk discuss the current transformation of urban infrastructures, given the rapid gentrification of urban spaces and the increasingly dense network of online retailers, delivery services, and co-working facilities. The concept of urban housing as an “autonomous cell” that Antonas articulates in his exhibition at n.b.k. serves as the starting point for scrutinizing the current tension between isolation and connectivity and how an increasingly privatized infrastructure relates to Western narratives of voluntary withdrawal.

Thanks to everyone who joined us for the symposium Critical Distance. Body Politics and Displacement in the Work of Mona Hatoum! Held at KINDL – Centre for Contemporary Art, the artist and international panelists (Sam Bardaouil, Tamar Garb, Natasha Ginwala, Polly Staple) discussed the notion of sculpture’s engagement in sociopolitical perspectives, the development of sculpture in an increasingly digital age, new attitudes towards the body and the uncertain and precarious conditions of our world.
_
Currently, three Berlin institutions present the multifaceted work of Mona Hatoum (b. 1952 in Beirut, lives in London) in the first large-scale survey of her work in Berlin. The three-part exhibition takes place at Neuer Berliner Kunstverein (until 13.11.2022), Georg-Kolbe-Museum (until 8.1.2023) and KINDL - Zentrum für zeitgenössische Kunst (until 14.5.2023).

Aristide Antonas designs imaginary places in urban space that address social and environmental challenges of our time through community-oriented approaches. In The Pulp of Things, his first institutional solo exhibition in Germany, Antonas continues his critique of the growing privatization of urban infrastructures.
_
In conjunction with his project at n.b.k., Antonas will devote a conversation with Adam Szymczyk to the concept of urban housing as an “autonomous cell” that Antonas articulates in his exhibition. It serves as the starting point for scrutinizing the current tension between isolation and connectivity and how an increasingly privatized infrastructure relates to Western narratives of voluntary withdrawal.

Join us this Saturday for the symposium Critical Distance. Body Politics and Displacement in the Work of Mona Hatoum! Starting at 2 pm at KINDL, with Sam Bardaouil, Tamar Garb, Natasha Ginwala, Mona Hatoum, Polly Staple et al.
_
Mona Hatoum broadens the notion of sculpture from questions of materiality to critical thinking. Her long engagement with themes of exclusion and exile, changing notions of gender and race, and, not least, the body itself, provides new perspectives on contemporary debates and current political discourse. The symposium will deal with the notion of sculpture’s engagement in sociopolitical perspectives, the development of sculpture in an increasingly digital age, new attitudes towards the body and the uncertain and precarious conditions of our world.

Mona Hatoum is considered a prominent representative of Postminimalism, taking the visual code of Minimal Art and deconstructing or expanding it in a targeted manner in order to articulate concerns. On Oct 29, an international symposium held in conjunction with the survey exhibition of the work of Mona Hatoum will deal with the notion of sculpture’s engagement in sociopolitical perspectives, the development of sculpture in an increasingly digital age, new attitudes towards the body and the uncertain and precarious conditions of our world.

In addition to Gülsün Karamustafa’s new work Irreversible Remnants for the n.b.k. billboard series, a projection of the film The Suffragette (1913), starring the famous actress Asta Nielsen, is shown at n.b.k. on the 1st floor. While the controversial film was shown in its full length in movie theaters in Berlin, it was so heavily censored in Bavaria that director Urban Gad refused to have it shown there. Starting point for Karamustafa’s new work Irreversible Remnants, is her fascination for the first film salons in Berlin, founded in 1913, only one year before the First World War.

_
In his show The Pulp of Things, Antonas continues his critique of the growing privatization of urban infrastructures. The starting point for his reflections is the increasingly dense network of online retailers, delivery services, and co-working facilities, which promotes the illusion of the private home as an “autonomous cell.” This sense of isolated domesticity dominates the new architectures of densification that are gradually replacing department stores, nightlife districts, and office buildings characteristic of capitalist city centers.

The publication Services Working Group (Fillip, 2021) revisits the groundbreaking exhibition, Services: The Conditions and Relations of Service Provision in Contemporary Project Oriented Artistic Practice, which was organized by Helmut Draxler and Andrea Fraser at the Kunstraum of Leuphana University of Lüneburg in 1994. Mobilizing a two-day working group as a central operative structure by which the exhibition itself was realized, Services embodied key debates concerning the socioeconomic conditions of the art field as well as critically reflexive discussions on labor relations, governance arrangements, and authority dynamics that constitute practical efforts to transform institutions.

05/10/2022

Mona Hatoum’s exhibition at n.b.k. focuses on her dealings with the physical and psychological implications of structural repression through both domestic scenes as well as global scenarios. Hatoum’s Hot Spot III (2009), a globe outlined in bright red neon lines, depicts the entire world as a place of conflict and unrest. The monochromatic works Projection (2006) and Projection (velvet) (2013) are both based on the Peters Projection, a more egalitarian world map with the continents presented in their true proportion to one another, thereby resisting a Eurocentric perspective.

Mona Hatoum’s works at n.b.k. explore a state of existential uncertainty that the artist once called the “human condition of exile.” In installations such as Home (1999) and Mobile Home II (2006), objects from the domestic sphere are assembled into environments of potential threat. By turning kitchen utensils into buzzing conductors of a high voltage electric current and setting furniture in motion between two police barriers, Hatoum questions the notion of “home sweet home” as a safe and stable place.

Save the date: The n.b.k. Billboard project is located in the public space at the intersection of Friedrichstrasse and Torstrasse, a two minutes’ walk from Neuer Berliner Kunstverein, embedded in a central and highly frequented urban environment. Works by international contemporary artists have been presented here every six months, specially conceived for the large-format surface, and inviting visitors and passers-by to engage with the aesthetic and social implications of contemporary art as well as with the urban environment.
_
Starting point for Karamustafa’s new work Irreversible Remnants – especially conceived for the n.b.k. Billboard-Series –, is her fascination for the first film salons in Berlin, founded in 1913, only one year before the First World War. In addition to the billboard, a projection of the film The Suffragette (1913), starring the famous actress Asta Nielsen, will be shown at n.b.k. on the 1st floor. Save the date: For this year’s edition of the n.b.k. Facade project, artist Haris Epaminonda has conceived an architectural intervention that uses playful visual and conceptual shifts to subtly question entrenched social structures while suggesting possibilities for change. Extending this work is an installation at the window on the 1st floor of n.b.k., which makes further references and connections between the interior and exterior architecture.

In her diverse body of work, which includes collages, installation, films, and photography, Haris Epaminonda explores the idiosyncratic inherent life of images, their power, and logic. Re-contextualized recurring motifs in Epaminonda’s oeuvre reflect her preoccupation with archetypal forms, colors, light, composition, figuration, and abstraction. Her fascination with found imagery is evident in her distinctive visual compositions, which link times and places and create new narratives.

Save the date: With an exhibition on the history of the Kunstaktien, n.b.k. traces the development of Uferhallen and a paradigmatic story of gentrification.
_
Uferhallen Kunstaktien (art shares) were over 3,000 original artworks that secured a stake in the Uferhallen, a 38,000-square-meter site formerly owned by the Berlin public transport company (BVG). Launched in 2011, the project aimed to establish a wide stakeholder base, securing the long-term existence of Uferhallen as a cultural venue. Ultimately, this unique project was unable to prevent a buyout by a major real estate investment group in 2021.
_
In n.b.k.‘s exhibition, Kunstaktien by all participating artists will be shown. At the same time, the exhibition On Equal Terms by Uferhallen e.V. is on view at Uferhallen, providing insight into the production processes of its resident artists. At the invitation of n.b.k. and in collaboration with On Equal Terms and the Berlin Art Week, site-specific works by Rosa Barba, Maria Eichhorn, Herta Müller, and Karin Sander will also be on display at the Uferhallen entrance gates.

Save the date: Aristide Antonas presents his first institutional solo exhibition in Germany at n.b.k.! The architect, philosopher, writer, and visual artist designs imaginary places in urban space that address social and environmental challenges of our time through community-oriented approaches.
_
In his show The Pulp of Things at n.b.k., Antonas continues his critique of the growing privatization of urban infrastructures.

Save the date: Mona Hatoum is showing her work at n.b.k. from September 14! During Berlin Art Week, not one but three solo exhibitions by the artist open to the public, presenting the first large-scale survey of her work in Berlin.
_
The exhibition at n.b.k. focuses on Hatoum’s dealings with the physical and psychological implications of structural repression through both domestic scenes as well as global scenarios. Her works address experiences of uprootedness – whether as a dissociative moment, trauma, or empowerment. Her ambiguous treatment of notions of home, gender roles and human vulnerability is a compelling artistic contribution to today’s pressing issues.
_
Mona Hatoum is considered one of the most important and influential artists of her generation. Her performances, videos, photographs, sculptures, installations, and works on paper deal with issues of displacement, marginalization, exclusion, and state control – themes she examines against the backdrop of both her own biography and current societal developments.
