Our exhibition „Patterns of identity“ continues in 2023. in picture works by

This work is part of our current exhibition "Patterns of Identity", a group exhibition displaying artists from different geographies, perspectives and trajectories.

In this show, we have included a selection of artists in which practices we can see an allusion of "patterns" that forge us as a society and as a collective group, whose beliefs, traditions, symbols and values construct our cultural identity and our sense of belonging.

Ethel Coppieters was born in Brussels in 1996. Her work portrays women whose faces and bodies evoke mixed feelings. Ethel’s characters possess a mysterious beauty, with delicate, almost apathetic faces that reveal the traces left by suffering.

Inspired by the women around her, the figures that she creates are nourished by classic feminine references with highly contemporary narrative elements, such as accessories, clothes and current objects that reflect the identity of our generation.

Through these portraits of women with deconstructed body proportions, freed from the mandates of beauty we know, the artist recreates dreamlike scenes to speak about the intimate and the universal.

Artwork details:

Ju Schnee
“Waiting for my dye to dry”, 2022
Oil and acrylics on linen + AR
200 x 160m

In her works, Ju Schnee (1992, Austria), sets the basis of the dialogue between an abstract digital-created world and the physical object. A balance between imagination, manifestation and reaction. From the abstract painting, to the manifested sculpture, to the reaction via augmented reality and the return to the digital world.

Ju, studied Information Design (BA) and Communication Design (MA) in her hometown Graz. Since 2020 she has her own studio in Berlin Mitte and in 2022 she opened also another studio located in Vienna, Austria. Berlin and Vienna, two meaningful cities to develop her work as an independent artist.

The intersection between the digital and the physical parts of her practice play a very important role in each one of her works. In the case of the one we have the pleasure of be showing in our space in Barcelona; "Waiting for my die to dry" , the spectator can interact with the work trough an app which brings the artwork to live with Augmented Reality.

She has been exhibiting internationally in the last years in countries like Germany, South Korea, Switzerland, Spain, France and Belgium.

About the Founders:

Oliver Elst and Laura del Arco are a well-known collector couple based in Berlin and Barcelona. Laura, a fashion designer and art director and Oliver a former car designer, both long term expats in Shanghai, China, entered the world of art collecting several years ago and, since then, have built significant art collections individually and together. Laura founded the Del Arco collection back in 2018, and is focused on supporting artists that explore female and self-representation, identity, belonging and gender portrayal. In her collection she supports female, non-binary and q***r visions in the contemporary art landscape. Oliver started collecting in 2016 and his collection was at that time focussed on contemporary African art and its diaspora. In 2020 the collection evolved and opened to include a wider range of artists around the world in which he identifies potential and a unique and characteristic practice ( )

Katia Lifshin, who's work is featured here, is a Ukraine-born Israeli artist. In her practice, she focuses on themes such as dreams, identity, and self-image. Her blue and green color palette creates a different reality, in which there is room for surreal elements, and the focus and attention is on the characters’ feelings. Katia relocated to the U.S in 2012, and studied painting and sculpting at Pima College, Tucson, Arizona. She returned to Israel in 2018, where she continues to live and work.

A look inside Jinhee Kim's solo exhibition: The Empty Chocolate Shop / 어느날 초콜릿가게가 문을 닫았다, which continues at Prior Art Space, Barcelona.

"Drawing inspiration from my studio in Berlin, I have used the setting of an empty chocolate shop to try to explain the concept of non-existing meaning. What can we see in the space now that it no longer sells chocolates promising love and friendship?

In the paintings, I construct a new space using structural elements of traditional chocolate shops, such as shelves and arches. These familiar patterns turn the space into a virtual space that can exist everywhere or nowhere. The figures in the paintings become the subjects instead of the shape of a heart. My intangible doubt becomes the chocolate’s symbol. It’s ironic. Even my doubt about the symbol of a non-existent object can be a symbol."

'Touch Wood' is NOW OPEN at Prior Art Space Berlin, curated by Selena Cerami ()

Featured in the exhibition are Conor Murgatroyd and Nettle Grellier:

Conor, (British, b. 1995) originally from Bradford, studied Fine art at Chelsea College of Arts in London. He has an obsession with history which has a great influence on his work; understanding the past allows him to make sense of the tangled web of influences, events, and emotions that make up the existential human experience.

Nettle (British, born 1993) takes inspiration from both her coastal surroundings and culture, as well as contemporary pop culture. She makes figurative oil paintings of a semi-autobiographical nature. Having been heavily guided by artists such as Paula Rego, Claude Cahun and John D. Graham, strange figures in rural settings have long been a theme she has explored in her work; a celebration of both vulgarity and vulnerability.

Jinhee Kim's solo exhibition: The Empty Chocolate Shop / 어느날 초콜릿가게가 문을 닫았다 continues at Prior Art Space, Barcelona.

"As a result of my first solo show presented here in Barcelona, I have been contemplating ways to hold on to the meaning of non-existent objects. From my point of view, the meaning of non-existent objects can be those that I’ve never had or those that are already gone.

Even though those non-existing objects have uncertain ways of being or inevitable conditions, I must believe that the abstract concept or the object can exist in any shape at any time. In particular, the process of holding on to the invisible things is interesting. We discover many such processes in our everyday life.

The shape of a heart in chocolate is the best example. However, I’m wondering how love and friendship could be held in that shape if the materiality of chocolate is in itself ephemeral? "

Thank you to everyone who came to the opening of 'Touch Wood’ - a group show in collaboration with Eve Leibe Gallery ( ) which opened during

The inspiration for the exhibition comes from the informal English idiom ‘Touch Wood’. From the old British myths and fairy tales, it was believed that wood was alive and holy, to touch a tree was to seek the spirit’s blessing and fortune. The artists have created work exploring their vision on the topics of fortune, human relations, and nature.

The show comprises 16 works by rising artists Skyler Chen, Christina Lucia Giuffrida, Nettle Grellier, Tosin Kalejaye, Kathryn Kampovsky, Sam King, Katia Lifshin, Adam Linn, Conor Murgatroyd, Marcus Nelson, Nell Nicholas, Tristan Pigott, Samantha Rosenwald alongside the fantastic pieces part of Prior Collection by Bambou Gili, Elisabeth Glaessner, Olivia Sterling and Amanda Wall.

The show will open during Berlin Art Week and runs through the month of October.

Prior Art Space Berlin presents ≤ Looking: For a Saviour ≥ - a solo exhibition for current Artist-in-Residence Joseph Aina

Joseph’s work investigates human nature and the way in which it is interwoven into the fabric of society. With a specific interest in contemporary notions of identity and its place within popular culture. He identifies symbols within the streets and media as methods of communication between the social and the individual. By creating an alphabet from these symbols, he constructs visual poems that romantically illustrate the ills of society. His recent mask paintings pick up on many of the ideas raised by Frantz Fanon surrounding the loss of ‘Blackness’ and identity crisis.
