common:ground

common:ground is the collaborative work of Eleni Tongidou and Phillip Staffa. The site-specific installation playfully reclaims the demarcation of the studio space from its surroundings. It becomes an extended space that holds a spatial configuration of gathered materials, objects and traces found and collected in the kiez.
The fascinating conundrum of object fetishisation starts to be negotiated: how do these objects fit into our urban story? What could we learn from these objects if we engage with them, embrace and observe them? What if we entered into a state of play with them? Or are they constantly playing with us?

Workshop:
Sunday, 25th of June at 3pm, Marion Bühl (Energie- und Klimaschutzmanagerin, BSR) will host a free workshop in the space on the topic of material cycles, climate neutrality and recycling.

This Friday! Come join and celebrate with us in music and art as ilali marks its 3rd year around the sun.

There will be artworks on show in studio by the collective members: Juan Camilo Alfonso, Eleni Tongidou and Phillip Staffa - catch a glimpse in the slides!

- as well as performances by Ameli in the Woods and Rogue Slang. Sonic journeys between brooding tides of jazz, electronica, melodic rifts and indie symphony psychedelia.

About the music:

"Ameli in the Woods" is an invitation to a dark and beautiful world full of many different forms: Dreamy and melancholic harmonies lie like a haze over the ramifications of the rhythm, which is home to warm, diverse vocals. They follow their artistic instincts in a quest for the possibilities of a completely unique and exceedingly modern understanding of jazz. To this end they embark on extensive explorations into the fields of electronic, classical and experimental music. Once you have heard Ameli in the Woods, you will be thrilled by a voice that is so epochal and powerful and in no way inferior to that of past world stars of soul.“

&

“Rogue Slang is the sound of Jamie Gordon, Cape Town born and Berlin based guitarist. His E.P, "Three Paintings in Waves", is the collective expression of colliding experiences melded together to take on the wild and soft electric harmonic order of things.”

Ypokosmo: Subterranean lands of the psyche

A Supernatural Experience by Amaury Bouquet & Wild Anima

Inspired by the underground healing temples of the asklepion sanctuaries from ancient Greece, Ypokosmo is an installation presenting the mythical underworld not as a land of the dead but as a metaphor for the subconscious. A place where lies the deep feminine in each and everyone personified by the goddess Persephone in Greek mythology. A place where we can find the deepest compassion and love facing our shadows, allowing the parts of ourselves we fear the most to unveil and better transmute them. Giving them tenderness and care. Digging deep down in the darkest compost of our inner gardens to transform and reveal the hidden rose present in this murky soil of our psyches. To realise that ultimately the shadow is there to show us the places that are needing to be loved and that the darkest night can foster the brightest illumination from the light inside ourselves. The supernatural inside. The inner photosynthesis.

The installation space will feature artworks created by former participants of Supernatural during the tarot performances as well as poetry, soundart and other photography relating to the project and the theme of the subconscious.

The artists will share an open discussion about their process on creating the project and will present a new participatory art experience “Dream Therapy” involving interactive subconscious storytelling and live music.

Program:

19:00 Artists talk and presentation around the Supernatural Experience

19:30 Open discussion with the public

21:00 “Dream Therapy” art experience

Christmas concerts at ilali

Christmas is the gathering of the hearts, and we invite you to come join us, as we celebrate that poor hummus of a religion, that condemned us to our current predicament of repressed metaphysics, massformations and the never ending pile of contradictions.

Kamile.Inc, a mixture of indie and folk, expresses the melancholia of our time in her serenades of irreparable beauty.

Sound like Andrej celebrates the release of his new Album, which range from light-hearted observations to frenetic blasts and the full spectrum dominant tones.

Climaxing with the kill shot crescendo, Drugstore Beetles, will blow his triumphant horn with a nihilistic furore, as he sings his songs of joyous abandonment.

The making of our last exhibition has been much fun!

Here is a peek behind the scenes and some pictures of our lovely crowd at the opening night.

The works were presented cut roughly, conveying their analog printing in the darkroom where has spent the last weeks in preparation.
The rawness of the display, contrasted the warm and intimate outlook she has on her subject matter.

Open until Sunday 27th 18:00.

We are excited to announce a photography exhibition by opening this Friday 25th Nov.

Fr 25th Show and drinks from 18:00 - 22:00
Sat 26th 12 - 20:00
Sun 27th 12 - 18:00

Giulia Facciolo's work resembles a diary of photographic entries. Mundane objects of urban life appear staged, as if positioned to be intertwined with narratives far from their own. Her camera clicks to capture the fleeting moment we perceive synchronicity; ever-present props of civilisation escape their humdrum existence and become a mirror of ours. Finally, Facciolo reassembles the analog traces of her journeys in the dark room. In tactile relationship with the tropes of her perception, she presents them in a sculptural installation.

InDeScribe is a show by artists Valentine Emilia Bossert (Berlin) and Trystan Williams (London). Both artists know each other from time spent studying in London and collaborating on the Patatas Guerra project. Since then, their artistic paths have diverged and converged in intriguing ways. Their respective practices mirror and echo each other in their attention to small anomalies, interest for the fringe and forgotten, and eliciting contradictions. Works emerge and develop by taking walks and drifting journeys, materials are gathered, rubbings and reliefs made, words inscribed and objects scattered.

The show is an attempt to bridge and merge their differing outcomes and similar processes. The raw materials of stone, brick and detritus are used as substrates, either to impress upon or draw from. Words are inscribed, textures lifted, impressions of objects recorded on paper, copies of text engraved, seams excavated, examined and altered. Ghostly traces form poetic spaces, where abstract and concrete, presence and absence, past and present collide in mysterious monuments. Their work together creates a palimpsest of layered materials, methods and meanings, alternating paths weaving toward and away from each other.

This Thursday, September 29th, comes to ilali. The artistic practice of the collective is an exercise in communication and permanent dialogue with the scenarios and places of public memory - existing or imagined. As a group they question the way in which concepts such as identity, life and collective existence as communities are socially constructed. To do so, the collective uses posters, painting, stencils, video art, performance and any other type of graphic and aesthetic language that arouses the attention, questioning and reflection of those who observe and listen.

*Inauguration Thursday September 29th at 6 pm*, with a talk by the collective and live rap from : and !!
On *Friday September 30 the exhibition will be open for visitors.*
On *Saturday October 1 we close with the talk: Coca is not co***ne by the at 5 pm.*
"The drug trafficking business operates under colonial logics and allows the reproduction of the armed conflict in Colombia. We will talk about its impacts and about the strategies of self-organization of peasants from the south of Cauca through the Escuela Agro Ambiental Arraigo, to confront this problem".

The talks will be held in Spanish with English translation.
*Welcome! Free admission.*

Exhibition opening this Fri 29 7-11pm!

Thank you to all who’ve supported the project, there have been many lovey moments.

Words by ,

“The show will include experiments with anthotypes, phytograms and lumen printing plus a collaborative work made with folks who came to my plant-based photography workshop earlier this month. It’s been really interesting thinking about the limits of what you can work with within an urban environment when it comes to botanical matter, whilst also recognising how we can engage with the ‘wildness’ of a city. I am still returning to Maria Sledmere's essay 'Estranging Natures' in which she describes photography as “an agential force - a technology of time, space and light - within our ecologies of perception”, and thinking about how lens-based practices can embrace methods of noticing that shed light on the dark and murky age of the Anthropocene.”

Hey there! Another reminder for our events this week!

& will co-host a day workshop on Friday the 22nd (10:00-16:00) which builds on some of the processes of collaboration that they have developed in their joint publication, a holding place. There are still a few places left and free tickets can be booked, just head over to ilali‘s site and book though the events page.

Words by the artists: “In the workshop, we will collaborate through listening and storytelling. We will use voice and writing to nurture a correspondence with one another, as we investigate the places we hold and the places that hold us.

We are asking attendees to bring along a pen and some paper, an object you are willing to let go of, and an anecdote of an object you lost. This workshop is for anyone interested in exploring collaborative writing.”

Hey!

ilali is an artists’ studio bringing together a group of international artists and curators in the heart of Schillerkiez, Berlin. Similarly to any community, ilali forms a microcosm. The group endeavours to reflect on this interconnected state of working together. The artists strive to further develop their own projects according to their intrinsic needs and desires, while remaining open to the constant possibilities for change inherent in a collective construct.

The space is focused on communicating its purpose in collective unity and in relation to the environment it finds itself within. This is echoed in the origin of the name “ilali’. Inspired by its founder’s South African origin, the name ilali comes from isiXhosa and means “village”. Within ilali, artists create and collaborate on their practices, and sell and communicate their works in the gallery space. Ilali is lastly an “ alternative social space”, designed for interaction between artists and the surrounding community as well as a venue to facilitate events and distill ideas outside everyday life.

These different dimensions are essential for ilali’s artists to expand and expose their practice. To them, art is a self-styled communion evolving through non-hierarchical prefigurative politics. Once they found a space, things began to collide, merge and transform. As they navigate through the ever-changing shape of their individual artistic faiths and desires, they aim at extending further out into orbiting affinity circles, groups and galleries. Their central objective is to honor their creative process, and in doing so, to nourish the interaction with their surrounding community. Welcome to the village.
