Archaeology Spotlight 🏺🔍

🪙 Five of eight X-shaped copper ingots found beneath a tree in Chombe, central Malawi, in 1967 have been traced by lead isotope and chemical analysis to the Kipushi ore body in DR Congo, about 790 km away. Thinner than other ingots of this type and cast in damp sand, they appear to be rough local copies, likely recast somewhere along the trade route.

⛰️ The first two intact burials excavated at Göbeklitepe, Türkiye (Pre-Pottery Neolithic B, 8700–8000 BCE), suggest the human bone fragments scattered through its monumental buildings may have come from graves beneath house floors, carried downslope by landslides, although other mortuary practices cannot be ruled out.

Archaeology Spotlight 🏺🔍

⚓ Around 500 iron bars weighing roughly a tonne, dredged from a silted-up branch of the Danube at Deinham, Upper Austria, are likely the cargo of a Late Iron Age shipwreck (4th–1st centuries BC), the largest assemblage of its kind found in Europe.

👃 A woman buried face down at Sanzhiyuan cemetery, Henan, China (1298–1404 CE), shows healed bone damage around the nasal opening, possibly the first skeletal evidence of punitive nasal amputation from ancient China.

You need an EAA ID to submit (membership payment not required at this stage)
One person may submit one session as main organiser, and be involved in up to two sessions total
Each session needs 2–5 organisers from at least two different countries
The main organiser submits via the portal and serves as main contact, and this role can't easily be changed later

, 35 years ago, on 19 September 1991, hikers on the Tisenjoch pass found a body melting out of the ice. Ötzi died ~5,300 years ago; his clothing, tools, tattoos and last meal have reshaped what we know of Copper Age Europe.
