Pražské centrum pro romské dějiny (Prague Center for Romani Histories) při FF UK má za cíl upozorňovat na význam studia historie Romů pro komplexní pochopení evropské historie.

📢 Join the international conference “Culture, Identity, and Social Justice: Anti-Racist Perspectives in Romani Studies and Beyond” organized by the Central European University Romani Studies Program.

The event will bring together scholars, activists, and practitioners to discuss anti-racist approaches, social justice, and new perspectives in Romani Studies and related fields. The conference is part of the wider Khamoro festival program and will take place in Prague in a hybrid format. ✊🏽📚

Včera jsme si připomněli Den romského odboje ☝️

Tento den připomíná odpor Romů a Sintů proti nacismu během druhé světové války — od ozbrojeného boje až po každodenní projevy odvahy, solidarity a snahy zachovat lidskou důstojnost tváří v tvář perzekuci. Vztahuje se také k povstání Romů a Sintů v Osvětimi-Březince v roce 1944.

Pražské centrum pro romské dějiny při FF UK při této příležitosti sdílí záznam debaty s potomky romských partyzánů, která proběhla po představení Černý partyzán v divadle Minor.

Hosty debaty byli:
▪️ Zdeněk Serinek, vnuk romského partyzána Josefa Serinka
▪️ Rudolf Murka, synovec partyzána Antonína Murky
▪️ Jan Jirků, režisér hry Černý partyzán a ředitel divadla Minor

We invite proposals for the workshop “The History of Romani Women’s Activisms in Eastern Europe, 1945–1990s”, which is taking place in Prague (Hotel Belvedere) on 29–30 October 2026.

📣 Join us for the annual Prague Center for Romani Histories conference, organized by the Institute of Ethnology at the Czech Academy of Sciences.

The conference "Between Cultural Appropriation and Ethnic Shifting: The Entangled Histories of Romani Imitation" (27-29 May, Prague) explores questions of identity, representation, and exclusion in both historical and contemporary contexts.

🎤 Keynotes, panels, and discussions will address themes of cultural appropriation, ethnic shifting, and the politics of Romani identity.

Dne 1. dubna 2026 proběhlo v Radě Evropy ve Štrasburku slavnostní zahájení výstavy Holocaust duše českého romského malíře a architekta Zdeňka Daniela, uspořádané Pražským centrem romských dějin (FF UK).

Výstava se věnuje tématu holokaustu Romů a Sintů a jeho dopadům na další generace. Níže se můžete podívat na výběr fotografií z vernisáže i samotné výstavy 👇

📅 Připomínáme také, že 8. dubna se v Radě Evropy uskuteční významná akce u příležitosti Mezinárodního dne Romů, která bude další příležitostí výstavu navštívit.

On April 1, 2026, the exhibition Holocaust of the Soul by Czech Romani painter and architect Zdeněk Daniel was officially opened at the Council of Europe in Strasbourg, organized by the Prague Center for Romani History (Faculty of Arts, Charles University).

🎨 Výstava romského umělce Zdeňka Daniela ve Štrasburku

Od 1. do 8. dubna 2026 probíhá v budově Rady Evropy ve Štrasburku výstava českého romského malíře a architekta Zdeňka Daniela s názvem Duševní holokaust (Holocaust of the Soul).

Výstava zahajuje druhý ročník měsíce Opre Roma!, který Rada Evropy věnuje zvyšování povědomí o historii, současnosti i výzvách, kterým čelí Romové a Travellers v Evropě v souvislosti s Mezinárodním dnem Romů (8. dubna).

Akce navazuje na jeho vůbec první výstavu, připravenou Pražským centrem pro romské dějiny již v roce 2018 (Mé černobílé stíny aneb Memento mori), na které bylo představeno deset černobílých kreseb, které mezitím Zdeněk Daniel věnoval Muzeum romské kultury, státní příspěvková organizace. Na nové výstavě v budově Rady Evropy bude představeno dalších 8 obrazů.

Výstavu připravilo Pražské centrum pro romské dějiny při Filozofické fakultě Univerzity Karlovy. Součástí je také vícejazyčný katalog doplněný odbornými texty.

🎨 Exhibition of Romani artist Zdeněk Daniel in Strasbourg

From April 1 to April 8, 2026, the Council of Europe building in Strasbourg will host an exhibition by Czech Romani painter and architect Zdeněk Daniel titled *Holocaust of the Soul*.

The exhibition opens the second edition of Opre Roma! Month, an initiative by the Council of Europe dedicated to raising awareness of the history, present, and challenges faced by Roma and Travellers in Europe in connection with International Roma Day (April 8).

The event follows Daniel’s very first exhibition, prepared by the Prague Center for Romani Histories in 2018 (*My Black and White Shadows, or Memento Mori*), which presented ten black-and-white drawings that Zdeněk Daniel has since donated to the Museum of Romani Culture, a state-funded institution. The new exhibition at the Council of Europe will present an additional eight paintings.

The exhibition was prepared by the Prague Center for Romani Histories at the Faculty of Arts, Charles University. It is also accompanied by a multilingual catalogue featuring expert texts.

🎓 Meet out member of executive committee, Vita Zalar!

Vita Zalar is a Max Weber Fellow at the European University Institute in Florence, where her research focuses on the history of anti-Roma structural racism during the transition from feudalism to capitalism in the Habsburg Empire and its successor states.

Her doctoral thesis, defended in December 2024, examined the punitive governance of Roma and Sinti in the Habsburg Monarchy and the Kingdom of Yugoslavia between 1848 and 1941. In recognition of her innovative research agenda, she was awarded the 2023 BASEES Study Group for Minority History (SGMH) Prize for Best First Book Proposal for her project “The Political Economy of Antigypsyism: Habsburg and Post-Habsburg Perspectives.”

Vita Zalar’s work combines social and legal history, conceptual history, and the history of (racial) capitalism. Moving beyond linguistic and cultural turns, she pursues a materialist interpretation of her sources, offering new perspectives on the political and economic foundations of antigypsyism.

In addition to her research, she co-organizes the Romani History Seminar at the Prague Center for Romani Histories.

🎥 Our new database was recently featured in a video report by the Czech public broadcaster Czech Television (ČT24).

The database collects and presents testimonies of Roma who experienced N**i persecution during the Second World War. By documenting and making these accounts accessible, the project helps preserve individual memories and contributes to a deeper understanding of the history of the Roma and Sinti Holocaust.

The report also highlights the importance of systematically collecting and preserving these testimonies for historical research and public memory.
