Jan Rousek is a filmmaker and artist whose practice brings together film, artistic research, and a critical reflection on colonial legacies in visual culture. He studied History at the University of South Bohemia and Documentary Filmmaking at FAMU, where he completed his doctoral dissertation on the ideology of colonialism in Czechoslovak cinema. His work explores how the moving image shapes historical memory and social perceptions of so-called “others,” while using film, archives, and installation to open up new ways of reading these images. His work has been presented in galleries and at film festivals.
In his solo exhibition 𝘐𝘯 𝘈𝘧𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘢 𝘰𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘛𝘳𝘢𝘪𝘭𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘎𝘢𝘮𝘦*. Rousek presents three of his most recent works: 𝘌𝘮𝘱𝘵𝘺 𝘗𝘭𝘢𝘤𝘦𝘴 / 𝘞𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘈𝘣𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘠𝘰𝘶, 𝘔𝘪𝘳𝘦č𝘦𝘬?(2022), 𝘏𝘰𝘸 𝘵𝘰 𝘍𝘪𝘭𝘮 𝘪𝘯 𝘈𝘧𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘢 (2024), and 𝘔𝘢𝘤𝘩𝘶𝘭𝘬𝘢–𝘔𝘢𝘤𝘩𝘶𝘭𝘬𝘢 (2026). Through critical and subversive approaches to Czechoslovak cinema, the works examine the ways in which it constructed stereotypical images of Africa and its inhabitants.
*The title of the exhibition project is a paraphrase of Machulka’s book 𝘐𝘯 𝘈𝘧𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘢 𝘰𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘛𝘳𝘢𝘪𝘭𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘎𝘢𝘮𝘦.
