Monte Festa

Monte Festa stands on a dominant peak, 800 meters above the surrounding valleys.

Armed with four 149 mm turret guns and an open battery, it lacked proper infantry defense—only a few dozen rifles and one outdated machine gun.

Originally meant to be disarmed, everything changed after the breakthrough at Battle of Caporetto.

Under Captain Winderling, the garrison held out against overwhelming forces. With limited communication and supplies, they kept firing on bridges, railways, and enemy movements in the valley.

When the machine gun failed, they threw rocks.

Encircled and out of ammunition, the defenders destroyed their own guns. One of their final shots detonated an enemy ammunition depot near Tolmezzo.

Monte Festa surrendered only when there was nothing left to fight with.

In this case, we are looking at a structure designed for an M18 “Hellcat” tank turret, connected to an extensive underground complex.
