The name of the SLAVA project refers to the words ‘slave’ and ‘Slav’. These words are similar in a number of languages, a fact linked to the early medieval slave trade, in which the Slavic lands were one of the most significant sources of slaves. The original term for the Slavs thus also became the name for slaves.
The aim of this project is to utilise new research methods and focus specifically on these people, who have received so little attention in historical sources.
In our research, we will focus on analysing the skeletal remains of possible slaves from Spain, France, Germany, Sweden and the Czech Republic. According to historical records, Prague is considered to have been the largest slave market of its time. At the same time, we will be looking for contexts where people who had experienced slavery might have been buried. It is not yet clear how their bodies were treated or where these people were buried. For specific individuals for whom we already have some evidence relating to slavery, we will endeavour to describe their life stories through a more detailed analysis.
The ERC SLAVA project will begin in April 2027 and run for five years. Until then, the preparatory Czech project ERC CZ inSLAVA is underway; it was this project that enabled us to secure this major European project.
