Painted Visage, Spirited Line - The Art Exhibition of Pan Yulian
Pan Yuliang (1895–1977) stands as an iconic figure in the modernization of modern and contemporary Chinese art, and one of the earliest female pioneers of the 20th century to break free from the fetters of gender through sheer force of will, carving out her own place on the international art stage. This exhibition presents 90 original masterpieces by Pan Yuliang, including oil paintings, color ink works, and line drawings. Tracing the parallel threads of her artistic evolution and her life journey, the exhibition unfolds Pan Yuliang’s remarkable odyssey - from one of the first female students at the Shanghai Fine Arts School, to her formative years of study in Paris and Rome, and on to her receipt of multiple international honors - including the Gold Medal in Belgium and the Prix Dorlet in France. Through a rich selection of works, the exhibition reconstructs her inner world and, combined with her legendary experiences, redefines Pan Yuliang’s place in art history. It offers a fresh reflection on her integrated practice of modern art, while engaging with enduring contemporary questions of identity, the body, and self-formation.
