The Shanghai Glass Company Ltd initiated and sponsored the establishment of the Shanghai Museum of Glass. Having witnessed the industrial development of glass i

n Shanghai, this Company has painstakingly preserved and recorded one hundred years of glass history and culture. Observing that an ordinary glass factory had such an extraordinary history, Zhang Lin, CEO of the Shanghai Glass Museum, transformed the once hot and stuffy glass factory into a space for artistic creation; a place where the ordinary glass renders, in a creative manner, the extraordinary imaginations and endless sharing.

Stele (2018) by Liu Jianhua is a key work from the Shanghai Museum of Glass’s Annealing program—a cross-disciplinary contemporary art initiative. After almost seven years of exhibitions and outdoor displays, it now takes its place in the Museum’s Reception Hall.

First shown at the 2018 West Bund Art & Design Fair, this piece made from glass and carbon fiber challenges our ideas of glass. Its matte, deep red surface evokes solemnity and tension, stripping away the usual fragility and shine.

🎨 Liu Jianhua (b. 1962, Jiangxi, China) is known for his ceramics and installation. In Stele, he used material to explore social contradictions and cultural meaning, inviting us to rethink everyday experiences.

Starting from May 18,2025, the Shanghai Museum of Glass presents Groundless Flower, a solo exhibition by artist Frank WANG Yefeng. Centered around glass as the primary medium, the exhibition weaves together animation, sculpture, and painting to reflect the artist’s profound reflections shaped by his nomadic, cross-cultural experiences around the globe.

This exhibition expands upon Desert Garden, the large-scale installation featured in the Encounters section of Art Basel Hong Kong 2025, offering a broader context for understanding WANG’s artistic practice. As the 12th exhibition of the museum’s Annealing program, Groundless Flower continues the series’ commitment to experimental approaches in glass art. Through the lens of contemporary art, audiences are invited to explore and imagine the boundless potential of this vibrant, ever-evolving material.

The exhibition runs through October 12,2025.
