When the woven textures of Osaka cross the sea and unfurl the pleats of time within the exhibition hall in Zhujiajiao, Shanghai, Tsuyoshi MAEKAWA’s artistic journey becomes a channel linking the contemporary art scenes of East Asia. As a key second-generation figure of the Gutai movement, Maekawa has woven not only a narrative of innovation in abstract art through the warp and weft of burlap, but also a sustained inquiry into the evolving relationship between material and spirit in modern culture.

Born in Osaka in 1936, Maekawa’s artistic awakening resonated with Japan’s postwar artistic reemergence. When Gutai leader Jiro YOSHIHARA declared in the 1956 Gutai Art Manifesto “Gutai Art confronts the essence of matter,” “emphasizes the body and material,” and “advocating direct, concrete action,” the young Maekawa was already searching for breakthroughs in the coarse texture of burlap. By the late 1950s, he had abandoned the smooth foundations of traditional painting, fastening raw linen directly to the stretcher and letting splashes of paint and visible stitches turn the material itself into the protagonist of the work. This almost “sculptural painting” approach brought forth a spectacle in the art world—transforming cloth from a utilitarian object into a spiritual vessel, and making stitches an expressive force even more potent than brushstrokes.

Tsuyoshi Maekawa has almost consistently used fabric as his primary medium. At first glance, one might assume that he is a fiber artist or textile artist.
However, unlike flat works created through weaving or dyeing, or three-dimensional pieces exploiting the materiality of cloth, Maekawa’s work resists such categorization—for his art is painting that uses fabric as its medium.
“Do not imitate others.” “Create what has never been done before.” Even now, at the age of 89, Maekawa continues to embody the avant-garde spirit of Gutai in practice. The creative energy he displays commands nothing but genuine admiration and awe.

Shina SATO|佐藤しな(b.1998)

Shina SATO (b. 1998, Yokohama) left Keio University’s Faculty of Law in 2021 to pursue illustration and manga. Featured in ILLUSTRATION 2022, her artistic journey began during a personal hiatus, sparked by an offhand suggestion to draw. Creating initially on her iPhone and sharing on social media, fan encouragement led her to publish seriously. She believes such small interactions saved her and hopes her art can similarly resonate with others.

SATO is renowned for depicting charming girls within mysterious, dreamlike worlds where character and background boundaries blur. Her subjects seem to melt into their surroundings yet radiate a quiet, central presence, capturing fleeting moments of daily life.

Her distinctive process involves meticulously hand-painting everything in a scene – from cosmetics counters to arcade prizes – without tracing, building complex worlds from scratch. Despite the intricate detail, the emotional core remains clear: conveying modern youth’s anxiety, loneliness, and fragile hope.

Drawing on her legal studies for remarkable focus and endurance, SATO constructs immersive worlds with astonishing skill despite dedicating less than a full year to professional art. Her undeniable potential marks her as a compelling emerging talent to watch.
