Shanghai Biennale 上海双年展主场 The Shanghai Biennale is the highest-profile contemporary art event in Shanghai and the most established art biennale in China. The Biennale began in 1996.

It has been held every two years since then at the Shanghai Art Museum usually beginning in September. There is a different theme every edition: "Open Space" (1996), "Inheritance and Exploration" (1998), "Spirit of Shanghai" (2000), "Urban Creation" (2002), "Techniques of the Visible" (2004), "Hyper Design" (2006), "Translocalmotion" (2008) , "Rehearsal" (2010),"Reactivation(2012)","Social Factory

(2014)"and"Why Not Ask Again? Maneuvers, Disputations&Stories(2016)"
上海双年展自1996年诞生,经过20年的历练,不仅成为中国最具国际影响力的艺术展示,更受到了国际艺术界的广泛肯定,被公认为是亚洲最 重要的国际双年展之一。它不仅在学术层面上向世界展示当代艺术的最新 成果,而且也在当代艺术与大众间构建起了一座沟通交流的平台。
从第一届以“开放的空间”为主题,经过第二届“融合与拓展”、第 三届“海上•上海——一种特殊的现代性”、第四届“都市营造”、第五 届的“影像生存”、第六届“超设计”、第七届“快城快客”、再到第八 届“巡回排演”,上海双年展始终以上海城市为母体,依托上海独特的城 市历史和文化记忆,来思考当代都市文化建设中的诸种问题,建立起一座 交往互动和展示的桥梁。
2012年上海双年展的举办场地,从旧马场改造的上海美术馆,转移 到由电厂旧址改建的上海当代艺术博物馆,并成为这座前工业建筑的开馆展。这标志着上海双年展从此将揭开新的一页,与电厂交相辉映,重新喷发艺术能量。
