-GENE NEWS-

Gene Gallery represented artist Gao Xiaoyi is included in the exhibition “Vitalisms” at Institute of Contemporary Arts at NYU Shanghai (hereinafter referred to as ICA) , which is from March 20, 2025 to June 14, 2025.

“Vitalisms” is an exhibition-as-experiment initiating a long-term research and education project on the “historicity” and “value” of contemporary painting in China. By gathering a group of artists, born in the 1980s and 90s in China and mostly educated in Chinese art academies, the research focuses on figurative paintings made in the past five years (i.e., since 2020), and experiments with their presentation in a shared space and time.

The exhibition “Vitalisms” and related events are presented as the second season of the ICA‘s artistic research program “Lightless Fires” (2024–26), exploring fermentation as a figure and technique of collective memory, autonomous archiving, and writing history.

“Vitalisms” is organized by Michelle Yeonho Hyun with BAO Yang, with additional support by ZHANG Yiying and PENG Linru.

Sincere thanks to ICA, Michelle, and whole entire team for their dedication and support!

During the creative process of artist Taro Maruyama, he seeks to build an entirely new moment—one in which the conventional relationships between tools, ornaments, and sculptures are reversed. Illogical and dissonant elements are transformed into tangible material forms, breaking the static limitations of traditional sculpture and generating a dynamic visual experience. The infusion of childlike fun and fantasy serves as a bridge between unity and contradiction, offering an exploration and practice of coexistence in diversity and harmony. In the work Half Rain, Half Rainbow, the relief-like composition and strong frontal perspective immerse the viewer into the narrative world that Maruyama constructs. A toothbrush is no longer merely a tool for cleaning teeth but is instead imbued with new life and form—its size is magnified to the point of becoming a sculptural entity. The cut at the head and neck of the toothbrush appears to release a mysterious substance, transforming into either a gentle drizzle or a radiant rainbow, symbolizing the fluidity of life’s rhythms and its boundless possibilities.

In the paintings of artist Liu Yixuan, toys produced in different eras often gaze intently at an undefined point from a deep, frontal perspective. This “gaze” endows the viewer with a palpable sense of being observed. The soft, blurred edges of the compositions, combined with low-saturation yet harmonious color schemes, collectively construct a synesthetic experience within the realm of figurative painting. It is as if these toy figures are being eroded by the “conventions” of their respective eras, leaving behind only a faint, virtual-like filter. Reconfigured into painted landscapes, these toys are not merely imitating established modes of viewing; rather, within the framework of imitation, subtle displacements are deliberately introduced to disrupt and transcend such constraints. Within the complex and nuanced psychological space that Liu constructs, the act of meeting the gaze of these toys evokes not only a sense of nostalgia but also an unavoidable feeling of strangeness—a recognition that the original emotional sustenance they once offered has become increasingly elusive.

The series “Love, Treats and Power Play” by artist Alissa Ritter delves into the inherent imbalance of power structures within the domestic sphere between humans and their companion animals. Pets, dependent on their owners, are often regarded as objects of affection and pleasure, without the ability to effectively express own boundaries. As their autonomy and private space are subtly violated, this relationship of dependency sometimes slips into an uncomfortable territory. The chosen archetype in the works—the Cocker Spaniel, a breed originally known for hunting—is crafted from tinted fibreglass, a material that visually evokes the texture of gummy candy. This transforms the dog’s image into one that appears sweet, consumable, and easy to exploit, symbolizing the entanglement of love and control, pleasure and dependence. Through such a playful yet unsettling depiction, the series highlights a tendency to infantilize pets and seeks to question the boundaries of companionship, issues of ownership, and the paradoxes of affection within human-animal relationships.

“For nearly two decades, Peter Rothmeier Ravn’s work has circled back to these suited men. Suits, he reminds us, are double-edged swords: tools to break barriers but also to build new walls. Beneath their ‘practical’ vibe, they’re still writing modern identity scripts. Peter’s artworks featuring men in various states of falling, crawling, or unconsciousness often leave viewers with a nagging unease and a pressing question: What the hell happened here? They also make you wonder if the artist is secretly shouting a manifesto about society’s suffocating rules—like how rigid ‘male identity’ gets squeezed into ill-fitting dress shirts. Behind these nameless, suited figures sprawled on the ground, you can practically see the anxiety, the identity crises, and the quiet rebellion against societal control.”

“Paian’s creative process is not limited to simply sketching from photographs he takes. Although he has captured many seemingly casual or even mundane photos—often resembling simple snapshots—his works carry subtle traces of human presence. While human figures are nearly absent, there are hidden clues to the photographer’s identity, creating a subtle sense of unease. Elements like a cluttered corner of a room, Pikachu on old magazines, a golf bag beside a sofa, or a McDonald‘s Happy Meal all seem deliberately chosen to contrast with the concepts of the sublime and the refined. This sense of ’banality’ suggests a fearless attitude. The scenes feel playful yet unpretentious, sensual but not glamorous, evoking a sense of quiet drama in the most ordinary moments.”

The audience typically assumes the role of an active observer, interpreting artworks based on their own perspectives, experiences, and emotions. Artworks, on the other hand, are often regarded as passive objects of observation, quietly displayed or performed, awaiting scrutiny and evaluation. In this exhibition, however, this conventional power structure is reversed—the artworks seem to be imbued with vitality, beginning to “gaze” at the audience. Through distinctive artistic techniques and ingenious exhibition design, viewers experience a sense of being “captured” or “examined” by the works, even being guided into specific emotional atmospheres or states of contemplation.

The exhibition space is no longer merely an empty vessel but a fluid and dynamic entity, saturated with various qualities and imaginative ideas, existing as a concrete form of spatial practice. In this context, the artworks are no longer passive recipients of the audience’s gaze but actively establish an interactive relationship with them, demonstrating an openness and receptivity to real space. The audience’s perception of the works is shaped more by the linkage among discrete points and a synchronic network of connections intertwining with their own past experiences.

In the digital paintings of artist Chen Paian, the stacked takeout boxes are not merely everyday clutter but rather identity markers engraved by consumer behavior. Blurred and symbolized debris erodes the subjectivity of life; as mechanized tidying behaviors strip away the charm of daily existence, a once chaotic room finally transforms into an invisible prison that confines the spiritual world. By refusing to “beautify” the imagery, the deliberately preserved smooth textures, combined with industrially produced images, collectively form a series of projections and illusions of desire.

Meanwhile, the suited figures in artist Peter Rothmeier Ravn’s works embody a fragile collective, on the edge of a shared psychological breakdown. The“suit,” a mythologized emblem of order, authority, and invulnerability—akin to the meticulously forged armor by modern civilization—finds itself rendered ineffective within Peter’s surreal theater. These men, stripped of their individual identity, don suits and are compelled to perform prescribed roles on the stage of symbolic order, suppressing their authentic inner desires. The suit becomes an alienated façade—a deceptive shield concealing the disintegration of their inner world.

Gene Gallery is delighted to announce the Group Exhibition “See you! Pavlov!”, featuring artists Alissa Ritter , Liu Yixuan , and Taro Maruyama , which is from March 8, 2025 to May 10, 2025.

Are the directions of images, forms, and media merely conditioned reflexes based on empirical experience? Through repeated associations with specific scenes or emotions, these cues can trigger certain responses even when detached from their original context, which might be a result of human being trained. However, this“trainer” is complex and multifaceted. It is a community woven from individual’s experiences, objective environment, and broader social structures, unique to each person—an intangible and formless “Pavlov” present in every life.

When confronted with familiar images that invoke outdated emotions, only to feel a sense of unusuality; when we find a small dog and a crystal-clear grape delivering serious political and philosophical speeches; when we experience the humor brought by the montage technique under ancient Babylonian styles… In that moment, Pavlov’s seemingly solid training outcomes begin to quietly unravel, and this is precisely the moment to break free from the grip of human fate’s finite nature.

Gene Gallery is delighted to announce the group exhibition “Ground Drilling”, curated by Yang Hongli , featuring artists Chen Paian and Peter Rothmeier Ravn , which is from March 8, 2025 to May 10, 2025.

“Ground drilling” metaphorically implies the existential predicament of modern individuals with a Sisyphean absurdity. Like a drilling machine trapped in endless rotation, the individual, despite an appearance of progress, remains unable to break through barriers, ultimately becoming ensnared in a self-constructed psychological dilemma through repetitive cycles.

Artist Chen Paian’s digital paintings take this contradiction as creative theme, layering fragments of daily life, blurring and symbolizing debris to construct a barrier that obscures life’s fragility. His works expose the rupture between the illusion of success and intrinsic values in contemporary society. Meanwhile, in artist Peter Rothmeier Ravn’s surreal theatre, a group of suit-clad figures collapse and curl up in postures that dramatically contrast traditional symbols of male authority. The opposition reveals power symbols as mere material projections of psychological collapse. In this process of disenchantment, the chasm between material appearances and the spiritual world is gradually unveiled.

Inspired by familial memories engaged in sewing, Yang Yifan‘s works skillfully integrate the art of collage using diverse materials. Grounded in nostalgic imagery, he fills collected and recomposed landscapes with fabrics rich in patterns, textures, and temperatures, each imbued with layers of memory. Through this process, Yang meticulously constructs surreal and psychological scenes.

His paintings embody an exploration of the speculation, uncertainty, and emotional adventure within the realms of everyday experiences that often elude direct perception. For Yang, experience transcends fragments of time or mere reminiscence; it becomes a phantom intertwined among animals, plants, and consciousness. Richly textured oil paints and layered fabrics converge, with lines weaving dynamically across the canvas, evoking a vibrant interplay of silence and clamor. His works present vivid and ever-shifting dreamscapes paired with lyrical narratives, transforming emotional and corporeal synesthesia into profound and enduring sensations.
