Hands-on with ancient books! On day two of the 2026 Global South Journalists Workshop, foreign journalists visited Nanjing University Library, one of China's first "National Key Ancient Book Protection Units," and tried restoring ancient bound books themselves. The library holds nearly 400,000 ancient titles. Restoration follows the principle of "repair as original" and "minimal intervention." Every fragment matters. From lecture to hands-on practice, they slowed down in front of the ancient books.

“Knowing first the civilization of some countries can guide us how to write a story from that place.” At the 2026 Global South Journalists Workshop, an Angolan journalist shared why understanding a country comes first. Without it, stories can go wrong, and that is where fake news about other countries begins. Culture shapes everything that happens.

From forks to chopsticks! On October 18, the 2026 Global South Journalists Workshop opened at Nanjing University. As the first workshop under the Belt and Road Journalists Network’s Global South Journalists Workshop Program, nearly 40 young journalists and students from Global South countries became "new classmates" for three days of lectures, visits, and chats. An Angolan journalist shared after class that he learned to use chopsticks just three days ago. He’s settling in fast. Understanding a different culture starts with a pair of chopsticks.

Teams from 10 countries and Hong Kong, China closed out the World Lion Dance Championship in Gaochun today — southern lions balancing on high poles, snatching the "greens," and acting out joy, anger, sorrow and delight. 🦁 The finals fell on the Double Ninth Festival, the day Chinese families honour their elders by climbing hills, sipping chrysanthemum w**e and simply spending time together. A festival that looks up to the old, a sport carried by the young — both of them on a 900-year-old street.

Pancreatic cancer is a highly malignant gastrointestinal tumor that is extremely difficult to detect at an early stage and is known as the "King of Cancers." Faced with this challenging disease, a single discipline working in isolation cannot effectively tackle it. Integrated multidisciplinary pancreatic centers have therefore become an important approach to improving the quality of diagnosis and treatment. The 9th Nanjing Academic Conference on Multidisciplinary Comprehensive Diagnosis and Treatment of Pancreatic Diseases was held on October 17. Experts noted that while pancreatic cancer remains aggressive, new therapeutic advances have emerged. Pancreatic cancer has no specific symptoms, and early screening and diagnosis are essential to seizing the window of opportunity for treatment.

How can international reporting respect civilizational diversity?🌍
Alla Ghazaryan from Armenia🇦🇲 shared a thought-provoking message:
“Cultural differences should never be an excuse for division or distance. True dialogue between civilizations begins with speaking out, but it grows through listening.”
She made the remark at a parallel seminar at the 2026 Belt and Road Journalists Forum in Nanjing, which is joined by nearly 100 media professionals from over 50 countries and regions.

Why did two senior journalists from two continent cry at the same memorial? At the 2026 Belt and Road Journalists Forum in Nanjing, John Wallace, Executive Director of the Asia-Pacific News Centre (Australia), choked up as he recalled his visit to the Memorial for the Victims of the Nanjing Massacre. "Every time you talk about it, you've got to get emotional," he said. "It's really sad that the Nanjing story doesn't have an ongoing life in the minds of most Western journalists. A day earlier, Brazilian Press Association council member Geraldo Cantarino was moved to tears inside the very same halls. Two journalists, two continents, one shared conviction: this history must not remain invisible to the West.
