Tomato Art Sketching Activity at Six Arts Museum

On October 7, 2025, young artists from Haining’s Tomato Art School brought their creativity to life at Six Arts Museum with a unique “Art on the Move” open air session.

Since its inception in 2009, Tomato Art has been dedicated to innovative art education for children aged 2-15. Centered on creative thinking, the 11-year, 5-stage curriculum integrates aesthetics, art, and design thinking. By exploring diverse materials, it nurtures children’s translation skills, multidirectional thinking, and artistic perspective. We believe art is more than just learning—it’s empowering. It helps children discover themselves, transform ideas into reality, and equips them with skills to face the unknown and excel in the future.

The Mid-Autumn Festival, or Moon Festival, is a cherished Chinese celebration rooted in ancient moon worship and autumn harvests, symbolizing togetherness. The bright moon is celebrated with mooncakes and moon-gazing.

According to legend, Chang’e, after consuming an elixir, ascended to the moon palace, adding layers of mystery and romance to the moon. This tale not only enhances the festival’s allure but also evokes deep longing for loved ones under the moonlight.

Besides enjoying the moon and mooncakes, the festival thrives with cultural activities like lantern lighting and riddle-solving, bringing joy and strengthening family and friendship bonds.

During the Mid-Autumn Festival, carrying lanterns beneath the full moon is one of the most poetic traditions. Since ancient times, families have lit colorful lanterns on this night as symbols of reunion, blessings, and guidance home. Lanterns come in many forms—painted with legends of Chang’e flying to the moon, shaped as lotus flowers, carps, or jade rabbits—all carrying wishes for prosperity and good fortune.

In Suzhou and the water towns of Jiangnan, lantern displays turn the Mid-Autumn night into a scene of glowing beauty. Children walk with lanterns in hand, laughter in the air; families hang lanterns in courtyards or along rivers, filling the evening with warmth and light. The glow of lanterns is not only decoration, but also a memory of togetherness passed down through generations.

This holiday, the Six Arts Market inside Six Arts Museum presents a special selection of handcrafted lanterns. Visitors may enjoy and, if they wish, take one home to extend the festive spirit.

In 1980, at just 23 years old, photographer Mike Emery first set foot in China aboard a cruise ship. With his camera, he captured vivid and timeless glimpses of everyday life in Tianjin, Beijing, and Shanghai — from playful children and bustling streets to quiet, intimate family moments.

Now, more than four decades later, Six Arts Museum Founder Mitch Dudek presents China · 1980, an exhibition that brings these precious documentary-style images back to life. Through Emery’s lens, visitors are invited to relive the warmth, simplicity, and human connection of China in the early 1980s.

Step into this nostalgic journey and experience history not as distant, but as alive, familiar, and profoundly moving.
