🖤Flickering Lights Emerging From Darkness | Li Pei’s A-Z

Li Pei’s monochromatic paintings are rituals of diving deep into an abyss of black. Charcoal—wood consumed by fire, yet also a vessel to spark flame—stands as a metaphor for the cycle of life. His practice evolves from collaged charcoal fragments to fluid washes of charcoal ink; within every rise and fall of the brushstroke, he captures bodily movement and the imprints of time.

What remains after the embers die? 🔥
Step into Lee Bae’s black abyss with our ”A to F“ keywords.🖤

South Korean artist Lee Bae uses charcoal as his medium to carve out traces of light within the darkness. From charcoal-block collages to soot-ink paintings, he transforms the remnants of combustion into a profound metaphor for the cycle of life. Every brushstroke carries the rhythm of the body and the sedimentation of time.

Even the most ”humble“ of materials can forge a rebirth. Silent, towering sculptures and suspended works on paper unfold a resonance that is ”both dead and alive,“ prolonging the final sigh of a dying flame.

📅July 11 – September 20, 2026

“After the Fire Dies, the Quest for Rebirth and the Texture of Space”

We are thrilled to announce that starting July 11, 2026, He Art Museum (HEM) will present “Dance for the Prayer”, the first major institutional solo exhibition in South China by South Korean contemporary artist Lee Bae.

Centered on the imagery of fire and embers, and employing mediums such as charcoal, bronze, and works on paper, the exhibition delves into the artist’s profound inquiry into the secrets of flame, the eternal dialectic between destruction and rebirth, and the interplay of matter and spirit.

Lee Bae uses charcoal as his language, questioning how the incomplete combustion of wood can become the starting point for rebirth. Different woods yield charcoals of varying depths, ground into powders of different textures, mixed with oil, guided by brush, embodied by dance, and traced onto paper. The vast emptiness serves as pauses between motions, and the stillness after the embers settle. To wander through the exhibition is to lose linear time, and to enter a field of ethereal and dispersing energy. This experience spirals like the ebb and flow of life itself: from lightness to gravity and back to lightness; from matter to spirit and back to matter. Destruction and rebirth are not before or after; they are two sides of the same coin.

As an artistic ritual of fire, ashes, memory, and rebirth, the exhibition not only presents an international artist’s extreme inquiry into matter and spirit, but also offers the public a contemplative site to perceive time, temperature, and the rhythm of life.

When light meets spiral, HEM becomes a theatre of perception.

✨ Black and Yellow Double Polyhedron Lamp (3rd floor) — a faceted glass sphere casting shifting shadows.

🌀 Atmospheric Column — a permanent spiral installation, rotating in two directions, echoing the museum‘s double-helix staircase.

One plays with light. The other with endless motion.

🪨💎A quiet block of concrete embedded with metal parts, gems, and jewelry.

“Foundation 1 #” by Li Jinghu sits in the outdoor space of He Art Museum. Unassuming in form, yet deeply rooted in the artist’s own hometown – Dongguan, a village-turned-hub producing 70% of the world‘s metal jewelry.

The work uses discarded factory materials: flawed pieces, semi-finished goods, broken crystals. Sealed inside a cubic meter of concrete, then carefully excavated to reveal hidden sparkles.

The artist lives among workers and sees their quiet perseverance and buried brilliance. This piece is a monument to them: rough on the outside, but never without light.

Just raw steel, bending through HEM outdoor space.

Bernar Venet‘s ”Three Indeterminate Lines“ doesn’t ask to be explained — it asks to be seen. What happens when a line escapes the page, gains weight, and starts a conversation with the air around it?

At He Art Museum, these coiled, torqued steel beams twist through Tadao Ando‘s sleek concrete garden — soft silence meets industrial roar.

📖Nathanaëlle Herbelin: Feel the Pulse

Last March→June, we filled our curved gallery with Nathanaëlle Herbelin‘s quiet pulse — Foshan’s evenings, Cantonese feasts, dim-lit bedrooms, Guilin drawings and newly-met friends, created during her two-month residency in Shunde.

The museum‘s spiral architecture and the drifting southern light breathe an ever-changing warmth into her canvases, which may ultimately bring out the previously obscured multiple facets of the everyday — the table, the shadow, the pause, and even the ones who stop to look.
