Happy Lunar New Year from Koryo Studio!

The featured image is a linocut of Manyongdae Schoolchildren’s Palace printed in 1999. The largest of two Schoolchildren’s Palaces in Pyongyang, comprised of a central building with two wings said to resemble the outstretched arms of a mother. It is a centre for training talented children in various extra curricular activities from advanced swimming, oratory skills, to playing the accordion.

🪗 It is also where children with an artistic flair learn the basics of art and calligraphy of which a number will go onto the Pyongyang University of Fine Arts.

Spectators at Kim Il Sung Sports Stadium in Pyongyang are watching volleyball and football finals.

The attention is on our good-looking socialist hero runner No.635 breaking the tape. The People's Sports Congress is the largest comprehensive competition held in the Republic on a 5-year cycle.

This event began in 1960 and its aim was to enhance the workforce, strengthen the collective cohesion of the socialist system, and discover athletes through the popularization of sports. More than 50 events, traditional style wrestling, and national defence sports (including hand gr***de throwing), are held.

Women at Work is a Koryo Studio commission. We commissioned 12 works by Hwang In Jae in 2012 on the theme of employment for women.

This work is characterised by skilled draftsmanship, cutting, and poetic use of a colour palette.

The beauty of his work lies in his ability to catch the rhythm of a piece and to make it reflect the actual job the female protagonist is employed in. From the simplicity and delicacy of ‘Friendly Bus Conductor’ to the boldness and pace of ‘Propaganda Unit’.

Hwang undertook the work from observations in Pyongyang and references to his notes and sketches used on his regular trips to the countryside.

Purchase Artwork
There is a limited edition of ten pieces per print and Koryo Studio will keep the first edition. The early editions will be kept as full sets (12 x 2/10- 5/10) and sold at a discounted rate / individual prints from 5/10 upwards are for sale.
