Magician Space
The transliteration of the word magician in Chinese - mó jīn shí - is connected to act of ‘sharpening’. Through a process of fine-tuning, it suggests a focused form of reflection, while in English the meaning suggests an unpredictable play with how reality is framed and revealed. We provide important first solo exhibitions for artists at a formative stage in their career and work
at the forefront in cultivating a dialogue with the international community. Through this dialogue-based process, our solo exhibitions are used to scrutinize the ideas of artists, facilitate cross-disciplinary interactions, and commission important works for an emergent wave of new voices. Based in the 798 Art District, Magician Space operates as a space that navigates beyond the remit of a conventional gallery to respond to the challenges in China. Our space offers an intimate scale allowing a public audience to freely engage with the work. We work closely with artists through project realization and the architecture of the space has inspired artists to alter, challenge, and intervene with our gallery structure. Underlined by a strong curatorial vision, Magician Space has collaborated with artists such as Zhuang Hui, He An, Bai Yiluo, Wu Xiaojun and up-and-coming young artists such as Chen Zhou, Li Ran and Guan Xiao. We have also organized exhibitions with leading international artists such as the Spanish duo Bestue/Vives and New York based artist Keren Cytter to new audiences in China.
在中文里，‘魔金石’一词被赋予了磨砺、磨练之含义，在精雕细琢的过程中，它代表着一个集中形式的反射；于此同时，英文中的Magician则扮演了一个在构成以及揭露现实中的不可预知的角色。魔金石空间自2008年成立以来，一直不断寻求新的刺激和挑战，进而填补中国当代艺术发展中的盲点和空白。 我们为那些处在事业成型阶段的年轻艺术家们提供首次个人展览的重要机会，并帮助他们同国际最前沿的艺术社区搭建对话的平台。
在这个以对话形式为基础的过程中，我们在展览中审视艺术家的思想，以促进跨学科的互动，并为新崛起的艺术动态发掘更多重要的作品。
坐落于798艺术区，魔金石空间的创办一直以打破传统意义上艺术画廊的框架为准则和导向，并不断挑战中国艺术的现状。我们的空间旨在为观众提供以一个相对亲密的环境，让公众能够更加自由的空间与艺术作品互动。我们在项目完成的过程中与艺术家形影不离，同时空间独特的建筑设计给予艺术家无限的灵感，激励艺术家创作出具有挑战、冲突或矛盾的作品。
值得强调的是，魔金石空间的团队具有独特的策展视角，曾与庄辉，何岸，白宜洛，吴小军等众多成名艺术家，以及陈轴，李然，关小等崭露头角的年轻艺术家合作。同时，我们也通过展览将国际主流艺术家介绍给中国观众，他们中包括西班牙双人组合Bestue/Vives和来自纽约的 Keren Cytter。
