We hope to see you this Saturday for the opening of Metamorphosis, featuring new works made for the La Capilla Azul by María-Inés Galecio and Karina Aguilera Skvirsky!

We sometimes get asked why La Capilla Azul is in such a remote location, which is a hard question to answer with just words. But the truth is that in recent years some of us have gradually come around to the belief that art exists so that we humans can show each other a better way forward. As you can see the Rio Paildad delta on the Gran Isla de Chiloé is the sort of place that you never forget once you visit. Here's a drone video from the year we began fundraising, but before any work has begun, where you can see the entire spread, including the Capilla (lower center). If it looks like how you imagine the Garden of Eden might have looked, you're catching my drift. And if you can't visit us in person, you can always do so on our website (capillaazul.com), and while you're there, please consider signing up for our mailing list and/or making an end-of-year contribution. And if the latter is not doable right now, just relax and enjoy the view. .azul

It appears Condé Nast Traveler has now picked up on the forthcoming The 99 book, in which our little Capilla Azul is featured as one of the most influential art spaces in the world. We even merit a thumbnail description in this article as "the curious Capilla Azul on the main island of the Chiloé archipelago, in southern Chile, which can be reached by ferry." Works for me!

Esta guía invita a descubrir pequeños grandes secretos: curiosos museos, instalaciones perdidas en el desierto o interesantísimas fundaciones.

Rafael Lara (1969-2024), four small woodblocks carved by hand, and a woodcut print made using a different block, n.d., as seen in the current exhibition of Lara's work at Capilla Azul, Espiritu Libre, which closes December 6. The intimacy of these works is pretty remarkable, as is their relative fragility. There are twelve in total, some more finished than others, and the current idea being floated is to make a single impression from each of the best ones, and preserve print & woodblock side by side in a single frame. Just wanted to share our updated and improved website, thanks to our graphic designer Erin Elder. There are still a few details to be ironed out, but please pay us a visit and let us know what you think:

Para quienes nos visitan desde la ciudad, todo lo que aparece ante nuestros ojos en la vida rural se presenta como una bendición y un espectáculo que deseamos que nunca termine. Asimismo, cada momento dedicado a contemplar la tierra y el mar del sur de Chile puede considerarse una prueba irrefutab...

Just launched a fundraiser for the Contuy Community Library!

Hello, my name is Dan Cameron, and I'm a Manhattan-based curator and art critic who's been actively researching the fascinating art being made in the Chilean archipelago of Chiloé for the past ten years, work that led to the opening, in May 2023, of a community-based exhibition space called La Capilla Azul (The Blue Chapel). Assembled from the 19th century wooden structure that had been the Catholic Church for the small community of Contuy (later deconsecrated), the project is managed by myself and two good Chilean friends: curator Ramón Castillo and photographer Pablo Carvacho. Pablo is co-owner, with his wife Marcela Enriqueta, of Comarca Contuy, a full-service lodge and working farm centered on four residential cabins nestled in the trees overlooking the Estuary Paildad. The Comarca is where the Capilla is located. Pablo is also President of Fundación Soiocutural Comarca Contuy, which practices sustainable agriculture, develops rural tourism, and promotes art education in three nearby rural schools.

Once Capilla Azul was open to the public, Pablo called a community meeting of several Contuy families in late 2023, to discuss what the residents would like to see happen next. To his surprise, most of his neighbors felt strongly that a community library should be the next feature of Comarca Contuy, so when a pair of French architecture students visited in early 2024 as part of a work exchange, they were given the task of creating initial drawings and visualizations for a small library located within a clearing in the woods behind the Capilla. These are the images you see here.

When word got out last year about our plan to build this library, we began receiving generous donations of books from friends, family and neighbors, so we decided to take a modified path. First, we would renovate a good-sized room at the Comarca to serve as a provisional library for the books already received, hire a librarian to begin classifying them, and open it to the community. Second, once that stage was complete, we'll adapt the drawings made last year for the locale, and begin planning for on-site constriction. The third step will be to purchase wood and other building materials, and the fourth entails putting together a crew, ideally led by Rene, the master carpenter who renovated the Capilla. While it is conceivable that these steps could be completed by the end of this year, so that the building would be done for our January 2026 opening, we are anticipating that it will take at least a year to get to the fifth step, which is building the library, and the sixth step, which is to stock it with books, audiobooks, and other materials. More than likely our specialty will be the arts, although many other subjects are sure to be covered as well in the library's holdings

The anticipated budget is as follows: $2000 for Step 1, $1000 for Step 2, $5000 for Step 3, $5000 for Step 5, and $2000 for Step 6. Our target date for opening the provisional library is September 2025, with the final building to be ready for use by January 2027.

Thank you in advance for any contribution you can make to this visionary project that will be an important vehicle to culturally enrich the community of Contuy, on the Gran Isla de Chiloé, Chile.

I'm beyond excited to invite all of you to the opening of our exhibition Second Nature on May 17 at .azul at We are also celebrating our second anniversary of being open to the public, and for the occasion we're bringing together the works of two superb artists who've been part of the Capilla Azul family since before the beginning: video artist Gianfranco Foschino (Santiago), who will present two of his classic works of fixed observation, and animator Esteban Perez (Puerto Varas), who will debut a new film that he's been steadily producing drawings for over the past two years. Our inaugurations have become justly popular, but even if you can't make it next month, Segunda Naturaleza will be open through early September. .perez.ojeda

When our first GoFundMe campaign was launched back in March 2022, we had no way of knowing who would donate, how often, and especially how much they would give. It's now more than 3 years and 2 campaigns later, and the $36,716 we've raised in that time has completely refurbished the 19th century building, with new HVAC, insulation, a roof, gallery lighting and a floor so shiny you could eat off it. It's also underwritten the production of six separate exhibitions with respective travel and expenses, as well as six openings, with the requisite food, drink and music.
My point is that we've had 200 individual contributions over 3 years, and the median donation to Capilla Azul has been $183.58. That's higher than I would have anticipated, and makes me even more humbled by people's continued belief in this project. https://gofund.me/7d5c4575

If anyone is in or near East Lansing, Michigan next Tuesday (April 8), I have the honor of being invited by the Kresge Art Center of MSU to give a public talk specifically on Capilla Azul. It's actually going to be my first academic lecture on the subject, and an opportunity to situate what we're doing within a broader curatorial and critical conversation. www.capillaazul.com
