‘Mariuccia Secol: Unraveling’
Curated by Monika Branicka and Eva Brioschi

on view until 1.11.2026

🔎 Mariuccia Secol (b. 1929) is a groundbreaking figure of postwar Italian art and activism. Her experimental approach to textiles and domestic materials makes her one of the most important voices of radical feminist art. When Secol embraced the „creativity of refusal” in the wake of 1968, she abandoned traditional brushes, confidently challenging societal norms with works that evoke the body’s wounds by unravelling threads from fabric.

Agnieszka Sosnowska - curator of the discursive program at Muzeum Susch - presents a major milestone: the 10th monograph in our series, published in collaboration with the renowned Hatje Cantz 📚

The book ‚Mariuccia Secol: Unraveling’ is part of our ongoing mission at Muzeum Susch to highlight women artists whose work did not receive the visibility and critical recognition it deserved at the time. Our publications are conceived as independent contributions to research and the writing of art history: inviting leading scholars, curators, and writers to examine the artist’s practice through diverse perspectives.
And we are certainly not stopping at No. 10! 🚀

Explore and purchase the monographs on the Hatje Cantz website. Link in bio! Have a good read!

‘Speed Up, Slow Down, Don’t Stop: Ten claims on criticism’ is a manifesto that articulates Brit Bartoon’s interest in criticism as a discursive and expansive genre

—one that gives form to contemporary and conceptual discourse while reflecting critically on criticism itself.
The text was conceived during her stay in Susch and is published in a considered selection of writings by residents and guests of the writers residency programme TEMPORARS SUSCH.

The Yearbook 2025 is edited by programme curator Mareike Dittmer Mareike Dittmer and designed by mono.studio Berlin. .kultur
It is dedicated to all who recognise books as carriers of ‘a uniquely portable magic’ (Stephen King).

For the Yearbook, residents and guests also contributed to THE EXEMPLARY SYLLABUS COLLECTION:
Inserted in each yearbook to come, this shared and evolving constellation of recommended reading listening and viewing is a living reference—an evolving framework for the multifaceted practices of MUZEUM SUSCH and beyond.

The Yearbook is exclusively on sale at Muzeum Susch reception and via email [email protected]
Check it out to read on and to find more recommendations by Chloe and the other guests of the residency programme.

Lilyana Rousseva (1932, Sofia – 2009, Sofia)
She was a Bulgarian painter. In 1959, she graduated from the National Academy of Arts, where she studied illustration under Prof. Iliya Beshkov. In 1963, she became a member of the Union of Bulgarian Artists. From 1962 onward, she participated in many group exhibitions held in Russia, Poland, the Czech Republic, India, Mexico, Germany, France, Malta, Switzerland, the Netherlands, the UK, and other countries. She also had solo exhibitions in Sofia and other Bulgarian cities. Her works are part of the collections of the National Gallery in Bulgaria, the Sofia City Art Gallery, and the Ludwig Collection, and they can be found in many private collections. One of the most important themes in her work is portraits of women - whether alone, in groups, or in family scenes. As a result, Rousseva’s work offers a remarkable panorama of women’s attitudes and stories, as well as a unique example of a woman’s gaze on other women.
The estate of Lilyana Rousseva will soon be available in the European Women Artists database.

Swipe left to explore the history of MUZEUM SUSCH! đŸ‘ïž

🌐 Step into the world of where the former brewery’s cooling tower now houses ‘Stairs’ (2016-17) – a massive deconstructed staircase by artist Monika Sosnowska, spanning 14 meters and weighing almost a tonne.

‘Stairs’ with its strings of black rectangular plates affixed to thin strips that wind down from the ceiling does not immediately betray its original function. Mangled almost beyond recognition and fastened to the walls like a ribbon it can be read not as much as impractical passageway, but a centrepiece for the blend of local architecture, traditional craftsmanship and new engineering, a contorted spine that holds the labyrinthine and diverse spaces of the main museum building together.

🔍 Monika Sosnowska, born in Ryki, Poland, in 1972, witnessed her country’s transition from Communism to Democracy, profoundly impacting both society and her surroundings. Trained at the Art Academy in Poznan and the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam (1999-2000), she keenly observed the societal and architectural shifts following Poland’s embrace of democratic market principles post-1989. Achieving international acclaim in 2003 with ‘The Corridor’ at the 50th Venice Biennale, Sosnowska solidified her reputation. Representing Poland again in 2007 with ‘1:1,’ her monumental installation further showcased her prowess. Incorporating elements of modernist architecture into her recent works, she infuses recognizable details like staircases and handrails with unexpected, almost eerie encounters. For Sosnowska, buildings serve as vessels of memory, conveying both political and psychological significance. Her artistic exploration delves deep into the complexities of societal evolution and individual experience, resonating profoundly in the contemporary landscape.

Guarded & Guided by the Work, the Mountains, the Road: On speaking before a work or landscape’ is an experimental guide to exercise thinking and speaking before (instead of about) a work of art: ‘
what matters first of all, is wether and how what is uttered (be it a giggle or a grunt) is attuned to the spirit of the moment.’ The text by Jan Verwoert was conceived during his stay in Susch and is published in a considered selection of writings by residents and guests of the writers residency programme TEMPORARS SUSCH.
