Das Völkerkundemuseum der Universität Zürich liegt an einem der schönsten Orte der Zürcher Innenstadt, umflossen vom Schanzengraben, im Alten Botanischen Garten, dem "Park zur Katz". What is the history behind the objects from the kingdom of Benin? Why did they end up in a museum in Zurich? What significance did these objects hold in their original context, and what do they mean to Nigerians and Afro-Swiss communities today?

More than 700 students from secondary schools, high schools and vocational schools explored these questions at our museum. While visiting “Benin dues. Dealing with Looted Royal Treasures”, they discussed colonial injustice and how it can be addressed today.

In conversations with our team, students learned more about the objects’ past, present and future.

The time has come: ownership has been transferred to the Nigerian state; this summer, the artefacts will return to their country of origin. In the future, pupils and students in Nigeria will be able to engage directly with their country’s cultural heritage through these objects.
