Did you know that we have the a model of the famous Temple of Aphaia on Aigina in our collection? This monument is one of the most controversially discussed buildings of Greek antiquity. Reconstruction of the figures, the arrangement of the figures, naming of the warriors or their colouring - all these puzzles have not been fully solved…
This reconstruction represents the installation by Adolf Furtwängler from the early 20th century and doesn‘t meet the most recent scientific discoveries, but it is a historical testimony of the long research done by different scholars over the decades!

Which one of these amulets would you have chosen to carry around with you, if you had lived 2000+ years ago? Some of them you could carry around your neck, others acted more like a token to carry in a pocket. A few even seem to have their own little personality if you look closely at their faces 👀

Material alphabet:

I like Iron and Ivory

In this material alphabet we show you some of our objects of two very different categories. Iron is universally used in antiquity for many purposes, from sturdy weaponry and building material to jewellery and everyday objects.
Ivory on the other hand is used for more filigrane things like decorative plaques or appliques or stamps. It was used throughout antiquity as you can see well from the different styles of carving visible in our objects.
