On this tour of Löwenbräukunst, you learn about the site’s history, architecture, and exhibition spaces, and gain fascinating insights into the current exhibitions and key figures who have shaped the complex.

🍻 Today the former brewery is home to museums, galleries, art and cultural foundations, as well as a bistro and café. In the 1980s, Zurich’s industrial enterprises moved out of District 5, leaving many factories and warehouses vacant. The Löwenbräu brewery, which had been located here since the end of the 19th century, closed its doors in 1986. Exactly ten years later, in 1996, , and several galleries decided to move into the former industrial building. The site evolved into an internationally recognized center for contemporary art, and its galleries remain among the leading players in the international art market.

🥳 In May, Löwenbräukunst celebrates its 30th anniversary! For this occasion we have put together a retrospective of the last three decades for you – featuring photographs from the 1990s, 2000s and 2010s. However, this series of images shows only a small glimpse of how Löwenbräukunst has established itself as a centre for contemporary art, continued to develop and become a defining cultural venue in Zurich.

Since May 1996, Löwenbräukunst has been the hotspot for contemporary art in Zurich. What was once an industrial area has become the vibrant heart of a new, bold art scene.

The move of Kunsthalle Zürich, Migros Museum für Gegenwartskunst and Hauser & Wirth to Löwenbräukunst marked the start of a development that transformed the neighbourhood for good. Inspired by the youth movements of the 80s, a place emerged where art, subculture and social issues converged.

🎥 We are pleased to present a new edition of CineLöwenbräukunst in collaboration with Center for Art Law Switzerland on May 12, 2026. The screening takes place at schwarzescafé/Luma Westbau and starts at 6pm.

'Elephants & Squirrels' (Gregor Brändli, Switzerland, 2025, 114 min.)

During her research in Swiss museums, Sri Lankan artist Deneth Piumakshi Veda Arachchige uncovers ancestral remains and cultural objects belonging to an indigenous Sri Lankan community Wanniyala-Aetto, brought to Basel over a century ago by Swiss naturalists. Decades after Sri Lanka’s first restitution demands were refused, Deneth and community chief Uru Warige Wannila Aththo set out to finally bring them home.
