“When this pencil is placed on a problem you can’t solve, a teacher appears who gives a careful explanation that you can easily understand.”

That is the future imagined by Shingo Takahashi, age 12. ✏️

Our new story, “What If? Learn How to Imagine the Future,” features children’s artworks created for the Art Gallery of Children’s Art for the Science of Tomorrow.

The story gives teachers a simple way to bring futures thinking into the classroom. Children look at how people once imagined tomorrow, then use their own ideas to think about what could come next.

It opens a conversation about change, choices, and the kind of future they might want to help shape.

Head, shoulders, knees and toes… 🎶

Before we knew what “learning through music” meant, many of us were already doing it: matching words, rhythm, movement, and memory.

If your class hasn't celebrated World Music Day yet, discover our story “What can I learn from sounds?”, which invites children to notice what sound does to them. How does the brain make sense of what we hear? What is the difference between hearing and listening? Which sounds help us feel calm?

And once they have listened closely, they can make some noise with the Music Maker game from PBS Kids linked in the story's resources.

Head, shoulders, knees and toes … 🎶

🪞 Miraculous mirrors and robotic helpers - how did people in the past imagine the future?

Our new story, "What if? Learn how to imagine the future!", encourages children to think about how ideas become reality and even go beyond today's inventions to come up with their own ideas!

Learners can hop into our time machine and explore early visions of space travel and 19th-century predictions about communication technologies. Interactive activities, unusual objects, and thought-provoking questions also help children explore how the choices we make today can shape tomorrow.

💭 By practicing futures thinking, they can develop the creative and problem-solving skills they need to face an uncertain world with curiosity and confidence.

Unsere neue Geschichte "Was wäre, wenn?

Every child has a way of learning. They may not always have the words to explain it.

Our worksheet “Why do we all learn in different ways?” helps children aged 7–12 put some of those ideas on paper.

At the center is the artwork Colorful Classroom by Ariane Jackson, a contribution from our partner Embracing Our Differences. Using the painting as a starting point, students look closely, reflect on what supports their learning, and complete the sentence: “I learn best when…”

Then they draw themselves as learners and add the people, objects, places, and tools that help them think, focus, and take part.

It gives teachers a simple way to start a conversation about what each child may need to learn best.

How can feeling hungry, tired, curious, or encouraged affect a student’s ability to learn? 📚

Learning can change from subject to subject, task to task, and even from one moment to the next.

For teachers, noticing this variability can help make classroom decisions more responsive: when to offer more guidance, when to step back, and how to understand what a student may need in that moment.

That is what our story “Design a robot that learns like you!” invites children to explore. As they build a robot friend, they reflect on what helps them learn: their strengths, interests, feelings, motivations, and the tools that support their learning.

What becomes visible when children get to show teachers how they learn?

3D images in the classroom, more than 100 years ago?

At the new SchulSchaulager in Köniz, we saw objects from Swiss school history that we helped digitize for the Digital Museum of Learning: an old school satchel, wooden pencil cases, a botanical box, and a stereoscope that made photos appear in 3D.

Now, children can explore some of these objects online in our interactive stories and see them in real life at the SchulSchaulager. In both places, they become starting points for questions about school, learning, and everyday life across time.
