ART FAIR | ART SALON ZÜRICH 2026

Laurent Marthaler Contemporary is pleased to take part in the 5th edition of Art Salon Zürich.

From Add Fuel’s reimagined azulejos and Simon Berger’s fractured-glass portraits, to Janik Bürgin’s photographs dissolving into pure color, Daniel Cherbuin’s cinematic pop imagery, Bill Claps’ luminous landscapes, Daniel Allen Cohen’s take on the icons of contemporary culture, Hendrik Czakainski’s reliefs of cities seen from above and Robert Schaberl’s light-shifting circular paintings, our booth brings together Swiss and international artists who master their medium and invent their own techniques.

The booth will also feature a solo show by Swiss artist Youri Messen-Jaschin, a pioneer of Op Art whose optical works play with movement, vibration and perception.

Collaboration | Add Fuel x Simon Berger

As part of the current exhibition BEYOND THE SURFACE, this video highlights the unique collaboration between Add Fuel and Simon Berger.

The meeting of their artistic universes has given rise to a fascinating visual dialogue. By combining Simon Berger’s fractured glass technique with Add Fuel’s intricate and reimagined azulejos, this joint creation perfectly fuses their respective languages, exploring textures, patterns, and what lies beneath the surface.

A great opportunity to discover how these two distinct practices come together to form a single artwork.

Artist | ADD FUEL

With the BEYOND THE SURFACE exhibition now officially open, a closer look is taken at the work of Diogo Machado, the Portuguese contemporary artist working under the moniker Add Fuel.

Captivated by the geometry, rhythm, and cultural richness of traditional tin-glazed ceramic azulejos, Add Fuel explores and reimagines this age-old art form. His works seamlessly blend classical decorative elements with a distinctly contemporary sensibility influenced by skateboarding culture, punk rock, and graffiti. Through techniques that include symmetrical repetition, trompe-l’œil, and layered patterning, he crafts multilayered compositions that invite the viewer to uncover hidden narratives and reflect on what truly lies beneath the surface of his intricate designs.

Born in Cascais, Portugal, his artistic journey redefines azulejo art as a dynamic medium for storytelling across various formats, from small-scale tile panels to monumental murals. His public art interventions and exhibitions span the globe, connecting communities with cultural heritage at prestigious institutions such as the Petit Palais in Paris, Saatchi Gallery in London, and Wynwood Walls in Miami.

Laurent Marthaler Contemporary is excited to present Beyond the Surface, a compelling duo show uniting Portuguese artist ADD FUEL and Swiss artist SIMON BERGER.

ADD FUEL (Diogo Machado / ADD FUEL) reinterprets traditional Portuguese tilework (azulejos) through a sharp, contemporary lens. Fusing intricate stencil techniques with graphic design and trompe-l’œil effects, his compositions appear to peel away at the edges, revealing vibrant hidden layers beneath centuries-old motifs.

SIMON BERGER (Simon Berger) redefines portraiture through his pioneering glass-fracturing technique. Using a hammer with surgical precision on laminated safety glass, he transforms calculated impacts into radiant, deeply human portraits, turning physical destruction into delicate, light-bending works of art.

As part of our current group exhibition APPARENTLY IN ORDER, we are taking a closer look at the work of Benjamin Tenko.

Benjamin Tenko’s painting moves between figuration and abstraction, where colour, gesture and fragments of imagery create compositions that are both intuitive and carefully constructed.

Benjamin Taillard, known as Tenko (b. 1980, Le Locle, Switzerland), lives and works in La Chaux-de-Fonds. A painter and musician, his practice explores the shifting boundary between figuration and abstraction through colour, gesture, light and a constantly evolving pictorial vocabulary.

Every order depends on a point of view. It determines what becomes visible, how things relate and what is left unseen. What appears given is often already arranged. On canvas, this is called composition.

Painting does not simply mirror an existing order. It isolates and reconnects fragments, alters perspectives, folds time and gives alternative visions their own coherence. Through pictorial illusion, familiar forms retain their identity as they lose their stability.
