Giorgio Morandi, Fiori 1952,
oil on canvas cm. 24x18
Lamberto Vitali, Catalogo Generale n. 794.

On view 23-30 June at booth 350, Trinity Fine Art, Maastricht Art Fair.

Sometimes a vase hangs in isolated splendor against a blue or snow-white background and is crowned with flowers (…) as if cut by angels, vigorous, vulnerable in an unearthly clarity. No painter, neither Rodin, nor Bonnard, nor Redon has been able to make flowers with such primitive fervor, with such a modern sensibility. Morandi renews a genre that in his work reaches pure moments of grace. (Jean Leymarie)

The Flowers series represent the most delicate and intimate part of Giorgio Morandi’s oeuvre. During the artist’s lifetime, it was very rare for one of these works to appear on the art market, as Morandi tended to give them as gifts to friends and family members. It is therefore unsurprising that the collection of Roberto Longhi, art historian and close friend of the Bolognese master, contains some of the most impressive versions from the series. Similarly, when Morandi’s sisters donated their personal collection of works to create the Museo Morandi in Bologna, it was primarily made up of works from his Flowers series.

Morandi’s flower paintings usually appear in one of two formats, both of which are exemplified by works in the exhibition. Either the vase is shown in its entirety and placed at the centre of the canvas, such as in Fiori (1952), or it is abruptly cut, as if in close-up, such as in Flowers (1953). The former, more traditional composition, began to appear around 1918-20, whereas the latter, more personal solution, first became visible in around 1943 and show influences of archaic Chinese paintings, Japanese woodcuts and French Impressionism.

The present painting is a representative example of the compositional research on still lifes with vases of flowers conducted by Giorgio Morandi in the early 1950’s. The remarkable number of variants produced by the artist throughout his last decades confirms his particular interest in this specific theme.
