From Where I Stand — Fabienne Lévy

Looking at this painting by Amit Berman, I am struck by something very simple. A man looks into a mirror, yet there is no reflection.

I cannot help but think of what is happening around us. The revolts, the anger, the divisions we see in the streets. Everyone seems so certain of their own truth, so absorbed in their own reflection, that we are slowly losing the ability to see one another. I believe in the importance of standing up for what we believe in. But I also wonder what happens when our convictions leave no room for anyone else’s.

Perhaps what touches me most in this painting is precisely what is missing. A reflection.

From Where I Stand — Fabienne Lévy

From Caravaggio to Monet, light has always fascinated me in painting. Looking at Amit Berman’s work, I find myself drawn to the way light enters a room, touches a wall, and makes an ordinary moment feel like a memory. There is something deeply moving about how light can suggest a presence, even in an empty space. Perhaps because it reminds me of moments we have all lived but cannot quite put into words.

Women have featured in Kozak’s work too, since she picked up a pencil as a child. She remembers, ‘Since I was a girl, I’ve always drawn women. And I think it comes from maybe being a girl too and like knowing my anatomy. When I was a kid, I also always drew dresses and the Virgin Mary.’ The artist admits that ‘A lot of my most intimate relationships are with women. We keep each other’s secrets.’

We all carry something from the women who came before us. And we pass it on. The bond is strong , we hold an infinite memory between generation!

Looking at Maria Kozak’s painting, I see this circle of women as the circle of Life.

Unfamiliar, Luminous, Remote therefore traces a movement rather than a fixed destination: from solitude towards connection, displacement towards belonging, darkness towards light. What begins as a photograph can become a painting; a body can become atmosphere; a landscape can become freedom. Berman’s work remains within these processes of transformation, inviting us to consider what happens when an experience passes through memory, place and the act of painting.

“ What strikes me in this work by Amit Berman is the emptiness around the figure.
So much space, so little noise. The landscape stretches out, the water seems endless, and suddenly everything slows down.
There is something deeply calming in that emptiness. It gives you room to breathe out, to pause.
There is Space for silence. Space for us."

In recent years, Kozak has been enjoying more attention. Her recent works are strikingly confident, and deploy a rich and evocative Symbolist–cum–expressionist aesthetic. It is easy to be captivated by the directness of Kozak’s physical
application of paint, utilising both impasto and delicate strokes, and the surety of her wistful and wandering organic lines.
