La mission de Karin Handlbauer, directrice et propriétaire de la galerie Mezzanin, est de proposer le travail d'artistes internationaux émergents, mis en situation avec des artistes de référence et largement reconnus. Après avoir dirigé un espace alternatif à but non lucratif, elle ouvre Mezzanin en 2002 à Vienne en Autriche, puis un deuxième espace à Genève en septembre 2014.

SKIN TO SKIN (18.09. - 07.11.2026)

"By affixing these richly decorated panels to the gallery walls, the arrist challenges the fundamental premise of the contemporary art space: the 'white cube'. Adopted in the 1960s for its supposed neutrality (Brian O’Doherty, 1976), this white cube nevertheless traces its roots to the Viennese critique of ornament and German functionalist architecture (Weissenhof, 1927), which had itself appropriated Mediterranean architecture (Partha Mitter, 2005). By reintroducing complex ornamentation where modernity demanded emptiness, Lou Masduraud situates her project within a politics of space and the gaze."

“Von dem, was trägt” (Of What Sustains), which Christian Kosmas Mayer curated for Kunstverein Eisenstadt, takes the former residence of the head gardener of the Esterházy Palace Park as its starting point.

Once the operational centre of one of Central Europe’s most important historic landscape gardens, the house quietly recalls the often invisible labour through which every garden first comes into being. Before anything can grow, there is an idea; for that idea to become a landscape, it requires care, observation, and time. From this point of departure, the exhibition asks how human ideas encounter the autonomy of living beings.

Across a wide range of artistic practices, the works approach plants through care, scientific inquiry, design, memory, observation, and imagination. They trace the fragile space between intention and growth, between cultivation and what ultimately escapes our control, asking how ideas become reality—and how they are transformed once they meet something alive.

The exhibition brings together works by Mark Dion, Hanakam & Schuller, Anna Jermolaewa, Anastasia Jermolaewa, Christian Kosmas Mayer, Sonia Leimer, Jenni Tischer, Lois Weinberger, and Anna Zemánková, alongside the collaborative book “After Eden: Art With and Against the Garden”, created by participants in the course of the same name, which Christian Kosmas Mayer taught this year at the Salzburg International Summer Academy.

"As part of her first solo exhibition at Galerie Mezzanin, Lou Masduraud presents a significant body of copper wall works. As tall and wide as doors, these pieces impose an immediately relational scale: they stand between the viewer and the architectural space, functioning less as paintings than as thresholds, whilst, at the centre, 'Self Street' marks the boundary between public and private space."

Join us on Thursday, September 17th, from 6pm onwards to celebrate the opening of Lou Masduraud's first solo exhibition at Galerie Mezzanin!

"In her sculptural and installation practices, Lou Masduraud proposes forms of reversals and alternatives to dominant realities. Approaching the network of human capacities as a complex system of managed infrastructures, the artist develops a body of work that functions as formal and conceptual investigation of specific elements such as fountains, basement windows and lamp posts, which belong to the daily experience of public and private spaces, exposing the relations of power and desire that underlie them. Masduraud not only blurs the boundaries between the function and the ornament, craft technique and conceptual practice, the outside and the inside, but eviscerates the skeleton of the structures we inhabit with an interpretive and voyeuristic take, questioning normative regulatory systems and enabling counter-narratives for public life."

THE EARTH IS THINKING ALL ALONG… engages with frictions, asymmetries, wounds and misalignments between ways of knowing, sensing, and articulating the Earth. In the interstices and enfoldings of all that matters here—between soil and sound, text and vibration, speculation and sediment—new dialogues and negotiations must be set up as a new Earth makes itself heard. The question is not whether we can restore a lost equilibrium, nor whether we can preserve a stable climate calibrated to human comfort. The question is whether we can begin to recognise and think along with the thoughts of the Earth today, accepting that these ideas may appeal to us, exceed us, ignore us, invite us, or move on without us. - Rick Dolphijn (curator)
