🐝 🌥️ Your Monday art break; Dive into our current exhibition! 👖🎨

The plastic and tactile works of Hudinilson Jr. dialogue in the rooms of the Galleries with the works of Jean-Charles de Quillacq. Here, the work entitled „Group“ (2019) by Jean-Charles de Quillacq dialogues with a piece by Hudinilson Jr. „Sans titre“ (1980s).

Dating back to the 1980s, the clothes covered in liquid latex constitute a central group of works in Hudinilson Jr.‘s creation. These are clothes worn by the artist himself, immersed in liquid rubber, and then preserved in a new sculptural state. This gesture - both a ritualistic stripping and an act of preserving the intimate - can be read as a form of archiving: the everyday becomes symbolic. The metaphor of molting is imposed and evokes similar practices to those of the Swiss artist Heidi Bucher (1926-1993), who also used latex to preserve the imprint of clothes or architectural elements, thus materializing the memory of the body and identity. These latex objects, like Hudinilson Jr.‘s Xerox works, possess a particular resonance in the context of the AIDS crisis, which in the 1980s, hit the artist’s circle hard. These three-dimensional works express an absence of the body that has become tangible: only the envelope, the imprint, the trace remains.

The work of Jean-Charles de Quillacq (*1979, F) consists mainly of casts of fragments of male bodies and limp-looking tubular structures. Everyday objects also appear, such as shoes and tables, as well as materials and techniques that receive little attention on an aesthetic level: plastic corroded with acetone or epoxy resin mixed with various bodily fluids.

His classicist exhibitions are usually characterised by a kind of cool eroticism and sparse fetishism. All of these contradictory characteristics challenge common notions of masculinity. For the Salle Poma, de Quillacq continues this exploration with a new group of works based on the artistic concept of “morbidezza” (softness of the body with positive connotations).

Since his death in 2013, the work of Hudinilson Jr. (1957–2013) has gained international recognition and is now considered one of the most important Brazilian positions in the field of Xerox Art, also known as Copy Art. At the end of the 1970s, Hudinilson Jr. began experimenting with photocopies — an artistic medium that soon became a central component of his work for both conceptual and practical reasons.

For the first time in a Swiss institution, the exhibition presents a comprehensive selection of Hudinilson Jr.’s Xerox works, collages, artist’s books and documentation of collaborative projects. It is complemented by works by his companions Rafael França and Mario Ramiro.

“Political Portraits” (Image 1-2) is a gallery of artistic, literary, and cinematic figures whom Gregory J. Markopoulos encountered in Europe in the late 1960s. Each portrait lasts the length of a 16mm reel (about three minutes) and is shot entirely in-camera, layering multiple superimpositions.

The film “Swain” (Image 3), created with Robert C. Freeman Jr., is based on Nathaniel Hawthorne’s 1828 novella Fanshawe. It stages the repeatedly deferred encounter between Fanshawe—an embodiment of the romantic outsider, played by Markopoulos—and a young woman.

The exhibition is the result of a research project conducted by ECAL/HES-SO. Its continuation will be on view from June 7 to August 30, 2025, at CIRCUIT Centre d’art contemporain in Lausanne .lausanne.

At this year’s Lakelive Festival in Biel , our art education team presented workshops for kids. Right by the lake, around our colorful Kunsthaus container, young artists worked with their hands — and even their feet — letting their imagination run completely free.

While Lakelive was all about the kids, our art education program also offers workshops for young people and adults throughout the year.
