Jean Tinguely
100 Jahre
7 November - 13 December 2025

OPENING Thursday, 6 November 2025, 6.30 pm

Jean Tinguely (1925–1991) is one of the most important representatives of kinetic art in the 20th century. His work is characterised by movement, mechanics, irony and a playful approach to artistic and social conventions. In addition to his well-known machine sculptures and spectacular actions, Tinguely also devoted himself to printmaking for decades, a medium he enlivened with just as much experimental and anarchic energy.

To mark his 100th birthday, Galerie Kornfeld is dedicating an exhibition to Jean Tinguely featuring works on paper, drawings/collages and prints. The exhibition will also present the newly published catalogue raisonné of Jean Tinguely's prints, published by Galerie Kornfeld.

Claude Monet
Paris 1840 - 1926 Giverny

Lot 172
Sur la falaise près de Fécamp

1881
Oil on canvas
65x81 cm
Lower left signed and dated by the artist ‘Claude Monet 81’

This painting by Claude Monet belongs to a series of impressive landscapes that the artist painted on the Normandy coast. It was created near Grainval, a small place between Étretat and Fécamp on the Alabaster Coast. The view opens to the east. On the right side of the painting, we see the distinctive Cap Fagnet, a striking cliff and a landmark near Fécamp. In the foreground rises a lush green, bush-covered cliff. Particularly striking is the tree in the centre of the painting, shaped by the coastal wind, which brings dynamism to the otherwise calm composition. It could symbolise the harsh forces of nature to which the coast is exposed.
Claude Monet spent several weeks on the Normandy coast in March 1881, which he had already discovered in the 1860s. In 1868, he had spent a winter in nearby Étretat. Throughout his life, he was fascinated by the interplay of weather, light, and landscape, which is shown here in particularly dramatic fashion. His stays in Grainval, Yport, and Fécamp inspired numerous coastal views, which count among the highlights of his early Impressionism.

André Derain
Chatou 1880 - 1954 Garches

Lot 121
Bord de mer à Collioure

1905
Oil on canvas
33x41 cm
Lower right signed by the artist ‚a derain‘

This painting was created during Derain’s stay in the southern French town of Collioure, where he painted together with Henri Matisse. Its intense use of colour and the spontaneous brushwork reflect the revolutionary break with traditional modes of representation. It is a thoroughly Fauvist piece.
We see a view of the coastal landscape of Collioure. In the centre of the image, a bright path with yellow accents leads down to the sea. On the left, plants in flaming red tones dominate, while on the right, house walls or fences rise up. A figure with a dark head, possibly a woman, sits in the foreground at the right edge of the image. The composition appears almost mosaic-like, with areas of colour and brushstrokes coming together like mosaic pieces to form a harmonious whole. The colours do not appear to be used naturalistically, but rather follow an emotional and compositional logic. Derain deliberately dispenses with perspective depth in favour of a flat, decorative effect. The brushstrokes are short, broad and directional, creating a rhythmic structure and lending the painting a dynamic vitality.

EDVARD MUNCH
Løten 1863 - 1944 Oslo

Lot 821
Der Kuss II - The Kiss II

1897
Colour woodcut on copperplate paper
60.9x46.4 cm, printing block; 66.1x48.8 cm, sheet size
Lower right signed by the artist in pencil ‘E Munch’

The woodcut ‘Der Kuss II’ from 1897 is an evolution of a motif that proccupied Edvard Munch throughout his life (see also lot 868). It depicts the intimate union of man and woman as an ecstatic yet simultaneously unsettling merging of two beings. The present sheet intensifies this theme in a radical way. Two figures face each other in an embrace, their faces fused into a single, featureless shadow. Individual identity seems to dissolve in an act of complete surrender.
The incredibly dense colouring supports the emotional content. Warm blue, green, red and brown tones, as well as dark areas, create an atmosphere between warmth, intimacy and existential gloom.

‘Der Kuss II’ is based on designs and motif variations that Munch had already developed between 1892 and 1896. The woodcut is thus the result of a longer artistic development. Formally and technically, however, it is a product of his Norwegian period with strong influences from his Parisian period. The vivid colouring of the present example is unique: Munch coloured one printing plate in a monotype manner. The sheet is of the greatest rarity. Only a few coloured impressions are known; the present, multicoloured woodcut is regarded as the crowning achievement of Munch’s graphic oeuvre.

EDVARD MUNCH
Løten 1863 - 1944 Oslo

Lot 803
Angst

1896
Colour lithograph on wove paper
41x38.8 cm, image size; 57x43.1 cm, sheet size
Beneath the image right numbered and signed by the artist in pencil ‘40 Edvard Munch’

The lithograph ‘Angst’ is one of Edvard Munch’s most impressive graphic works. It was first created in the context of Munch’s printmaking production in Paris, where he travelled in 1896 to develop his artistic techniques. During this creative period, he worked intensively in the studio of Auguste Clot and experimented with various colour printing processes.
‘Angst’ is not merely an accompanying work to the iconic painting ‘Der Schrei’ (The Scream) from 1893, but rather its psychological echo. While ‘Der Schrei’ depicts the subjective panic of an individual, ‘Angst’ addresses a collective feeling. The faces of several people - frontal, mask-like appearances - walk in a row along the edge of a fjord. Their gazes are empty, their mouths closed. In the background, a glaringly red sky can be seen, while dark, pressing lines traverse the water and landscape.
The lithograph underscores Munch’s radical approach to composition: the space seems to tremble and flicker. It is not a silent background, but part of the psychological experience.
‘Angst’ expresses a fundamental state of mind of the fin de siècle and is at the same time visionary for the 20th century. The individual is shown in a world that has fallen apart. Munch does not translate this feeling of life into a narrative, but into a psychological topography, using lithography as the ideal medium for emotional intensity and formal abstraction.

EDVARD MUNCH
Løten 1863 - 1944 Oslo

Lot 798
Junge Frau am Strand - Young Woman on the Beach

1896
Mezzotint and drypoint on Arches laid paper with watermark
28.8x21.8 cm, platemark; 42.1x31 cm, sheet size
Lower right signed by the artist in pencil ‘Edv. Munch’, below inscribed ‘Zink-koloriert’

The mezzotint ‘Junge Frau am Strand’ (‘Young Woman on the Beach’) from 1896 is a remarkable example of Munch’s ability to express existential themes through simple yet impressive compositions.
A young woman stands alone on a vast beach. Her figure stands out clearly from the background and appears almost luminous. The image symbolises longing and loneliness.
In ‘Junge Frau am Strand,’ Munch succeeded in creating an almost dreamlike scene. The contours are soft and almost blurred, yet the figure has a striking presence.

The theme of the lonely woman runs throughout Munch’s work. He expores the role of women in bourgeois society as well as how they are portrayed in male fantasies: as a lover, a muse, a threat, a mother or even asaint. The emotional ambiguity is typical of his Symbolist phase. Instead of concrete stories, he expresses psychological states.
Thus, the woman on the beach becomes a symbol of modern humanity, alone with itself and the world, searching for orientation.
The sea, which in many of his works appears as a symbol of the unconscious or transition, becomes a metaphysical space at the upper edge of the figure.

Provenance
Auction Palais Galliera, Paris, Succession de Madame Lang, 4 March 1972, lot 77, acquired there by
The Eberhard W. Kornfeld Collection, Bern

Alberto Giacometti's first decorative objects were created in the early 1930s as a result of his collaboration with the Parisian interior designer Jean-Michel Frank (1895-1941). In a second creative phase towards the end of the 1940s, he accepted private commissions to produce decorative objects in limited editions, including the 'Lampe avec deux figures'.
The figures and the light chalice stand on a plinth, which is placed on a cube-shaped base. While the ensemble appears static at first glance, it is simultaneously dynamic in the balance defined by the artist. 'Lampe avec deux figures' thus becomes a striking example of Alberto Giacometti's endeavour to create a balance between movement and stability.

Preview of our forthcoming auction

Whilst our team remains deeply engaged in finalising the auction sale catalogues, our specialists have commenced the presentation of the first three works by Edvard Munch.

These exceptional pieces originate from – a collection of profound historical significance. Arnold Budczies (1866–1943), a distinguished German art connoisseur specialising in modern prints and Expressionist painting, assembled this remarkable collection over several decades. The 247-lot Munch collection remained within the family for over 80 years before the desire arose for these treasures to pass into new, appreciative hands.

We are particularly honoured that this momentous transition should take place in Bern – the very city where Arnold Budczies acquired several prints from the celebrated Heinrich Stinnes collection in June 1938.

Our catalogue ‚Edvard Munch - Master of Prints‘ shall be published shortly.

Do stay tuned and register on our website for further particulars regarding our September auction sales!
