As part of the museum’s ongoing process of providing a resource space, we have taken the opportunity to expand, reorganise and make our library more accessible — bringing together works that amplify Arctic voices through art, literature, music and film.

Revisiting these materials is a joyful reminder of the many stories, perspectives and forms of knowledge held within our collections. It also invites us to reflect on how museums collect, organise and make knowledge accessible — and how we can create more space for Indigenous voices, perspectives and ways of knowing.

What a joy to rediscover these treasures and to see our library as a place for connection, learning and exchange.

Today, we remember a time that must never be forgotten—and never repeated. Orange Shirt Day reminds us to honour those affected by the residential school system, to listen, to remember, and to carry the commitment to reconciliation forward, even in difficult times that continue to shape our lives today.

Displayed together, Jutai Toonoo’s sculpture: "Speak for These Have no Voice" and Joanasie Toonoo’s drawing: "A Person. Who We Are" may be read as creating a dialogue between father and son. The works may be encountered as traces of an ongoing conversation: not necessarily one that offers answers, but one that leaves space for memory, identity, and the passage of knowledge between generations. Their encounter remains open, inviting each viewer to consider what might be carried forward, what might be transformed, and what might remain unspoken.

Klimawandel trifft Geopolitik

Die Arktis steht heute im Zentrum tiefgreifender Veränderungen. Der Klimawandel verändert Landschaften, Lebensräume und Lebensweisen, während geopolitische Interessen an Bedeutung gewinnen. In diesem Spannungsfeld braucht es nicht nur wissenschaftliche Erkenntnisse und politische Entscheidungen, sondern auch Räume für gegenseitiges Verständnis.

Kunst kann dabei zum Eisbrecher werden. Sie überwindet Grenzen, schafft Vertrauen und eröffnet einen Dialog, wo unterschiedliche Interessen aufeinandertreffen. Zeitgenössische Kunst aus der zirkumpolaren Welt macht die Erfahrungen, das Wissen und die Stimmen der indigenen Gemeinschaften sichtbar und lädt dazu ein, die Arktis aus neuen Perspektiven zu betrachten.

Mit unserem Artikel „Kunst als Eisbrecher“ möchten wir zeigen, dass Kultur weit mehr ist als ein Spiegel gesellschaftlicher Entwicklungen – sie kann Brücken bauen, Verständnis fördern und einen wichtigen Beitrag zum internationalen Dialog leisten.

Gerade in einer Zeit globaler Herausforderungen kann Kunst zum Eisbrecher für Zusammenarbeit, Respekt und Frieden werden.

Honoring Indigenous Peoples

Indigenous Peoples’ Day recognises and celebrates the original stewards of these lands, their enduring cultures, and their contributions to communities around the world. For thousands of years, Indigenous peoples have maintained rich traditions, languages, knowledge systems, and relationships with the natural environment.

This day is an opportunity to reflect on Indigenous histories, acknowledge the impacts of colonisation, and recognise the resilience and strength of Indigenous communities. It also encourages learning, dialogue, and respect for the diverse cultures and perspectives that continue to shape our shared future.

We are very happy to have Inuk curator Isabelle Avingaq Choquette (Avataq Cultural Institute, Montréal) with us in Bern for a residency at the Museum of Contemporary Circumpolar Art (MCCA), running from 20 April to 15 May.

During her stay, Isabelle is working closely with our collection and is curating the exhibition "The MCCA Collection, Revisited", opening tomorrow as part of the Arctic Voices cultural festival.
