The Cobalt Room Art and Photography by Sylvie Ball with a side dish of Gramercy Park Hotel history This is a new photography website for Sylvie Ball.

The site is named after a blue themed lounge called the Cobalt Club that operated at the Gramercy Park Hotel for two years and then closed permanently in 2005.

Stretched up Steve Parrino print. I found a stretcher that worked - it’s 30 x 30. Steve may be the only artist to combine monochrome abstraction with drapery, and the classicism that it evokes.

Disruption production:
My yellow ink jet nozzle was not working properly so after a number of fixes and cleanings I needed a yellow subject to print and I remembered this painting by Steve Parrino. Rather than print test patterns or diagnostic images I sent this image to the printer to see If I could make something that I wouldn’t have to throw away - and wondered how it would come out. There is a 3 inch border all the way around the outer edge that is a content aware fill. After doing a little reading I read that Steve was disrupting Greenbergian flatness (while caressing the dead co**se of painting) so the idea of a print of a Steve is quite antithetical to his aims. I like how he leaves visible how he constructs the painting. He stretches the painting leaving a much larger field of canvas margins attached. Then he lays down the gesso and then paints in the color - then unstretches it - and then re-stretches it with disruptions and folds on a larger stretcher.

I've created a recent survey of my artwork inspired by The Gramercy Park Hotel on my website. I live in the Gramercy Park neighborhood and have been passing by the hotel for years. Now that it is gone, I wanted to share some of it's aesthetics and objects and how they inspired my work and the 2019 Armory Show. Other artworks are also included. Cheers GPH!

In February 2023 I installed 2 of the 3 City banners that were produced for the 2019 (25th Anniversary) edition of the Armory Art Show in my family home located near Detroit, Michigan. My vintage photographs from the 1990's taken during the early years of the Gramercy Park Art Fair were used for the...

Another Warhol appropriation, this time his Orange Car Crash 14 times in the permanent collection of The Museum of Modern Art -executed as a throw blanket. I took the photo a few years ago and kept experimenting with it. I have contacted the Andy Warhol Museum to discuss permissions (for a different project) but they didn't answer. Available in two sizes.

Curl up with Andy Warhol's Orange Disaster 14 times. I took a photo of this painting by Andy Warhol at the Museum of Modern Art a few years ago. The image has been appropriated for a new use as a blanket. • 100% polyester • Soft silk touch fabric • Printing on one side • White reverse side ....

The Gramercy Park Hotel is going through its second liquidation in the past 16 years. Cobalt blue velvet wingback chairs and headboards revived the color theme of one of it’s past party rooms, the Cobalt Club. The lounge closed in 2003 and the first liquidation occurred in 2005. The hotel was sold and re-launched in 2006 by Aby Rosen and Ian Schrager
The defunct lounge inspired the name for this page.
