A lovely surprise upon returning home from New York and North Carolina.

A few days after settling back into my studio, I received a message from a close friend in Montreal with a screenshot of my artwork appearing in the new Netflix series 'Below'.

In 2025, Teichert Gallery in Halifax, which represents my work, contacted me about a production being filmed in Newfoundland. They were looking for artwork featuring squid.

As it happened, I had created several gyotaku prints of local squid in 2022, following a night of fishing in Argyle, Nova Scotia.

'Below' is a supernatural thriller set in a Newfoundland fishing community, where a mysterious sea creature threatens the town and its way of life.

My squid prints found their way onto the walls of the research vessel in this series.

It’s wonderful to see where these prints have travelled, from a night of fishing on the coast of Nova Scotia to a film set in Newfoundland.

From Brooklyn to the mountains of North Carolina.

After wrapping up Frondescence at Usagi, I travelled to Wildacres Retreat for the Nature Printing Society ’s 50th Anniversary celebration.

A very different landscape and rhythm. Days filled with remarkable gyotaku and nature printing workshops, learning and sharing with fellow nature printers, surrounded by towering pines, mountain vistas, misty mornings and beautiful sunsets.

After the intensity of preparing for and installing the exhibition in New York, it has been good to be here—to make, learn, spend time outdoors, and reconnect with this generous community.

A closer look at Frondescence at Usagi.

This selection of seaweed prints began with natural forms gathered from the coast, revealing the details and character of each seaweed through the printing process.

I've arrived in New York.

And day one is installation day, with plenty of tea.

After months of planning and weeks in the studio, seeing everything come together has been incredibly rewarding.

And now, I finally get to share it with you.

This selection of works on Japanese paper for Frondescence is now on display.

Fish, kelp, octopus and squid, printed through direct contact with the natural form.

I love the details this process reveals—scales, veins, membranes, textures and marks that might otherwise go unnoticed.

The exhibit is officially open.

It's incredible to think that work created here in Nova Scotia will soon be making its way to Brooklyn.

The snake-like fronds of Atlantic Rockweed brought Medusa to mind.

I was researching her mythology and history at the time, and the title Medusa’s Mercy emerged from that connection.

As Frondescence begins to take shape, much of my time is spent considering the flow of the exhibition—what stays, what goes, and where the anchor pieces might be placed.

There is only so much I can determine without physically being in the gallery.

I like that uncertainty.

Once I’m in the space, there will be new possibilities, problems to solve, and perhaps unexpected redirections. I’m leaving room for the installation to respond to the space—and for the space to have something to say about the work.

For some of the works in Frondescence, I’ve been using urauchi, a traditional Japanese wet-mounting technique that adds a supporting layer of paper to the back of the print.

I’m using a heavier kozo paper to give the works additional strength while allowing them to hang unframed, directly on the gallery walls.
