For some of the works in Frondescence, I’ve been using urauchi, a traditional Japanese wet-mounting technique that adds a supporting layer of paper to the back of the print.

I’m using a heavier kozo paper to give the works additional strength while allowing them to hang unframed, directly on the gallery walls.

This September, I will be exhibiting ‘Frondescence’ at Usagi Gallery in Brooklyn, New York.

I first discovered Usagi during a trip to New York to see ‘Hilma af Klint: What Stands Behind the Flowers’ at MoMA. Knowing I was looking for Japanese tea, my son suggested we visit Usagi.

Part tea shop, gallery, and bookstore, the space was designed by Japanese architect Sou Fujimoto. I felt an immediate connection to it and could imagine my work there.

That visit eventually led to an invitation to exhibit.

Over the coming weeks, I’ll share some of the process of preparing Frondescence—from my studio in Nova Scotia to its installation in Brooklyn.

I finally visited Le Caveau Restaurant, where Lynda, owner of Harvest Gallery, curated a selection of my work to be featured in this beautiful, intimate dining space located at Grand Pré Winery.

I am delighted that two pieces sold, which explains the empty spaces during the photoshoot.

Two new pieces will accompany this group soon: 'Burrowing into the Sea Floor Sand' and 'Deconstructed Lobster.' Both are gyotaku, and one is mixed media with gyotaku on canvas.

Sweet Woodruff
Hand-printed monotype, 8 × 10"

Sweet woodruff has long been associated with humility, protection, good fortune, and the quiet virtues of a well-lived life. Traditionally woven into May Day garlands and woodland celebrations, it carries a gentle folklore of sweetness, care, and renewal.

This print, along with a range of other hand-printed botanicals, cyanotypes, and nature-inspired works, will be available at the Summer Market at Tangled Garden this Saturday.

Hope to see you there!

Hand-printed monotype

Blue Moon — in honour of the upcoming Blue Moon on May 31.

Created on the first day of the year in 2001, in my tiny Tokyo apartment, this work was one of a series of three moon prints.

Each night, walking home from the train station, I found myself looking up—searching the sky for the openness and space that I missed from home.

The moon became a kind of companion: constant, familiar, and expansive within the density of the city.

Small Sweet Woodruff monotype prints

Sweet woodruff has long been associated with humility, protection, victory, and the virtues of a gentle, well-lived life. Traditionally linked with sweetness, good fortune, and quiet resilience, it carries a subtle language of care.

Stamping, signing, and preparing these sweet little prints for the upcoming Summer Market at Tangled Garden on June 6th.

I’ll have a variety of hand-printed botanicals, cyanotypes, and nature-inspired works available.
