🚢 100 Years of the KIPAWO!

On May 1, 1926, the KIPAWO ferry began operation, connecting Kingsport, Parrsboro and Wolfville across the Minas Basin as a fast, purpose-built vessel that would become the last to ever serve the route.

This summer, to mark the 100th anniversary and its lasting legacy, each community will host its own celebration by highlighting local stories and the history we share.

Dates and details are coming soon, stay tuned as we look back on a century since the KIPAWO connected our communities.

Have a KIPAWO memory or know someone who does? We’d love to hear it!

🌱Ever wondered how the Grand-Pré site really works?

It’s more complex than it seems.

Grand-Pré is managed through a shared partnership model. Parks Canada operates the historic site, but the broader UNESCO landscape is governed by a separate non-profit group made up of provincial, municipal, and community partners.

Join us for a free public talk with Claude DeGrâce, Executive Director of the Landscape of Grand Pré, to learn what this means - and what’s ahead.

Discover a new side to this familiar place.

In the news! Check out ther article by Kirk Starratt in the Annapolis Valley Register, published online March 23, 2026.

Wolfville Historical Society managing director Katherine Ryan said the recent cuts demonstrate a lack of heart and full understanding. She said it’s very troubling to see heritage, cultural, tourism, and community programming framed as “extra frills” opposed to essential services like health care and education.
In a recent statement to society members, she said heritage is not in competition with education; it is education. It isn’t competing with economic development; it drives tourism and local businesses. Heritage is not separate from community well-being, “it strengthens identity, belonging, and pride.”
“Strong communities require both essential services and cultural foundations. These are not opposing forces – they are interdependent,” Ryan said.

🎂Happy Birthday to the Town of Wolfville! 🎉 This image, taken close to the time of our town's incorporation, looks West on Main Street, at Central Ave (right next to where the current day Bank of Montreal is now). This friendly scene looks just like something you might see happening there today 😊
The paperwork to officially form the town was filed with the province on March 4th, 1893 and our town's first municipal government was elected on March 20th, 1893.📜

In recent weeks, discussions about provincial budget cuts have framed heritage, culture, tourism, and community programming as areas where savings can be found - as though they are optional extras.

📖Heritage is not in competition with education - it is education.

💰Heritage is not in competition with economic development - it drives tourism and local business.

💓Heritage is not separate from community well-being - it strengthens identity, belonging, and pride.
