Meet Paul Chafe from the Wooden Boat Museum. He will be speaking at the Take My Money! Revenue Generation for Heritage Sites panel on Saturday, October 17, at our 2026 Sustainable Heritage Tourism Conference.

Paul Chafe is an architect based in St. John’s, Newfoundland & Labrador, with a strong interest in the province’s heritage and vernacular architecture. He was the designer of the Quidi Vidi Village Plantation – recipient of the Southcott Award for New Building Design, presented by the Newfoundland and Labrador Historic Trust. Paul also acted as Project Architect for the John C. Crosbie Sealers’ Interpretation Centre in Elliston.

Paul strives to design innovative, contemporary buildings that complement the character of the historical built environment. Paul has developed expertise in leading community design projects, as well as investigating and developing inventories of heritage buildings, structures, and landscape features.

In his spare time, Paul enjoys canoeing, woodworking, and hiking with his family.

Meet Jerome Canning from the Wooden Boat Museum of Newfoundland & Labrador. He will be speaking at the Engaging Youth: Programs and Summer Staff panel on Friday, October 16. Register for the 2026 Heritage Conference to hear about how organizations can do more to bring youth into heritage!

Jerome Canning first began boatbuilding in Placentia Bay, NL, where he spent his summers fishing with his father and brothers and building boats during the winter. Those early boats were used as part of his family’s fishing enterprise or sold to commercial fisher persons. In 1983, Jerome received a Diploma in Small Craft Design from the Department of Naval Architecture at the Marine Institute in St. John’s. Since then, Jerome has continued to build wooden boats, some of which have been featured in Newfoundland and Labrador cultural heritage celebrations including a Norse Faering, a French Chaloupe, Grand Bank Dories and a number of Newfoundland Punts. Jerome has worked with the Wooden Boat Museum of Newfoundland and Labrador since 2009 as WBMNL’s Master Builder and Boatbuilding Instructor.
