History Moment 🏩 Did you know White Rock’s first hospital was led by a woman?

In the 1920s, qualified nurse Mrs. Gertrude MacMillan moved to White Rock and quickly recognized the need for a hospital in her new community. At the time, doctors were in short supply, and patients often had to travel to Blaine or Surrey for medical care.

In 1927, she opened her own private hospital, the first in White Rock, and operated it until her retirement in 1951.

Step back in time with these photos from our archives ⏱️💫

This slideshow features selected stills from The Land of the Peace Arch: A Photo Story, created by the White Rock Photography Club in 1978.

Founded around February 24, 1956, the club brought together photography enthusiasts through competitions, outings, meetings, and visits with fellow clubs.

In 1982, the club celebrated its 25th anniversary, after which it began to wind down, ultimately disbanding in the early 1980s.

Photos like these help give us a glimpse into what life in White Rock looked like in the 70’s. 📸🎞️

Every month, we team up with the White Rock Museum and Archives to feature historical business photos- and this month’s is a good one!

Check it out:

“Who doesn’t want fresh-baked goods delivered straight to their door?

This photo, circa 1920, features the Surrey Bakery delivery truck, based in White Rock. The truck made stops at local businesses and homes throughout the community, delivering goods baked right in White Rock.”

Thanks for Desmond and the team at the White Rock Museum & Archives for sharing this piece of White Rock history with us!

Come see our latest display [Dust]ing at the White Rock Community Centre and explore the cleaning processes of White Rock residents throughout the years! 🧺🧼

Humans have been living with and battling against dust, dirt, and mess for a very long time. In this display, we present physical objects of housework and cleaning from the WRMA Collections.

Often overlooked as mundane, these objects reflect a long history of women’s labour to maintain order and take care of their homes, families, and communities. 🏠❤️

Happy BC Heritage Week!

To celebrate this year’s theme, “Stir the Pot,” we’re sharing a glimpse into White Rock’s rich seaside traditions.

White Rock has always been the perfect place for a picnic! These photos from the early 20th century show construction workers, campers, and residents enjoying bites on the beach. More than a century later, not much has changed. and the beach continues to be a backdrop for everyday memories.

The passenger now features new interpretive signage, helping bring the history of the White Rock Railway to life. 🚂🛤️

This sculpture, created by Denis Kleine in 2014, commemorates the vibrant history of the railway in White Rock.

From the 1910s through the 1970s, the White Rock train station was the heart of the community, providing communication, transportation and a social gathering place.

Travellers could catch one of several daily trains to Vancouver, Washington, and surrounding areas.

Passenger service ended in 1975, but the station lives on as the home of the White Rock Museum and Archives. 🏛️💫
