Today, September 30, 2026, marks the sixth annual National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, a day designated to reflect on the legacy of residential schools.

On this day, we honour the children who never returned home, and those who were survivors of the residential school system. We also recognize the families and communities who continue to be impacted by the lasting impact of the residential school system, and the systemic injustices affecting Indigenous Peoples across Canada.

The journey to truth and reconciliation begins with an open mind, an open heart, and a willingness to listen and learn. The Whitby Historical Society encourages everyone to explore the local resources available on the Region of Durham website:
