The Squamish Lil’wat Cultural Centre showcases Whistler’s First Nations through art, exhibits, food, film, tours, crafts, and live performances. The Center features a “Class A” museum, contemporary gallery, intera

ctive and outdoor exhibits, gift shop, café, forest walk, and theatre. Our tour begins with a welcome song followed by a 15-minute film; a spectacular visual portrayal of Squamish and Lil'wat traditional territories— featuring our languages, history and present-day lives. After the film, our tour allows you to view exhibits that explore our relationship to the land and objects that celebrate our traditions of art, music, and ceremony, past and present. In our contemporary gallery, view modern Native art from both nations. Try a variety of indigenous-inspired fares in our Café such as our traditional bannock and in-house salmon chowder. Admission to the Centre includes the welcome song, feature film, and guided tour. This is a family-friendly cultural activity where guests have the opportunity to interact and engage with our Aboriginal hosts during tours, and songs. This spectacular attraction is open year-round and is located on the shared traditional territories of the Squamish and Lil’wat First Nations in Whistler, BC. This is the only Centre in the world that has purposefully been designed to demonstrate how two distinct First Nations can share territory, knowledge, and cultural practices in a way that acknowledges the uniqueness of each. This is reflected not only in the architectural design, but also in the way exhibits, activities, and programming is offered. The Squamish Lil’wat Cultural Centre (SLCC) is a not-for-profit initiative, and provides meaningful employment to its 90% Indigenous Ambassadors. All proceeds from the SLCC are invested in training and cultural revitalization programs for the Squamish Nation and Lil’wat Nation.

Today we honour our Matriarchs. Mothers are vital for our communities. A mother can be any woman in your lifetime. Your mother can be your mom, your grandma, auntie, sister, or cousin. Every woman is an important piece of the puzzle.

Many beings teach us about motherhood. The bears are a main teacher in motherhood. It's always best to stay away from the bear cubs because the mother won't be too far behind. Mother bears are very protective of their young. They have to worry about humans and other bears. They make sure that their young are prepared and know the lay of the land.

Mother Earth is the one who provides for us all. The humans, the plants, and the animals, we need her to survive. Mother Earth is our protector. She protects all that lives within her. As humans, we have to remember and learn to treat her with love and respect. Just like we would with our own mothers.

The Lil’wat Nation is one of eleven communities that make up the Statýemc Nation, we have the same culture and language with a Southern, Northern dialect and an area known as “The Lakes”.

Lil’wat, Samáhquam, Xa’xtsa7, Skatin, Sekw’wl’was, Xaxli̓p, Ts̓kw̓aylaxw, T̓it̓q̓et, Xwisten, Tsal̓alh and N̓quatqua.

Chiefs from each of the eleven communities met at Spences Bridge and discussed land rights of Indigenous People and signed the Declaration of the Lillooet Tribes on May 10, 1911. In the 1990s, the chiefs of each Statýemc Nations reaffirmed the Declaration of the Lillooet Tribes and sent it to the United Nations at Geneva, Switzerland.

Each year the Statýmec Nations takes turns hosting a ceremony to reaffirm the Declaration of the Lillooet Tribes, honour the Ancestors who signed it, and teach the next generation what it stands for.

The event follows the traditional protocol, where messengers are sent to invite all the people to join their ceremony and celebration. The skesen (Runners), the most traditional form of communication between communities, run to each community to deliver the invitation.

Curator Mixalhítsa7 Alison Pascal shares “The signing of the Declaration of the Lillooet Tribes is integral to the Lil’wat Nation and the St̓at̓y̓emc Nation together. It provides a foundation for us to follow and has guided us, in our work since then. It’s a great reminder of what can happen when you work together.”

In 2024, the Squamish Lil’wat Cultural Centre hosted an exhibition for the Declaration of the Lillooet Tribes, and more learning is available throughout the SLCC.
