Han Modern and Contemporary

Han Modern and Contemporary Han Modern and Contemporary specializes in modern and contemporary Canadian art.

Han Modern & Contemporary proudly specializes in Canadian art, with an analogous focus on European and Chinese modern and contemporary art movements. Following in the legacy of Han Art Gallery, which was initiated by the late art dealer and prominent artist Andrew Lui in 1995 and managed by Chloe Ng, we have been a team of reputable gallerists in Canadian and international art markets for over thr

ee decades. Throughout the years, this unique gallery has placed an emphasis on refined aesthetics and innovative daring, which both incorporate and exceed Canadian boundaries. Nestled by the picturesque Greene Avenue in Westmount, Han Modern & Contemporary especially promotes and celebrates the distinct individuality of a range of historical, mid-career, and emerging artists native to Canada, Europe and beyond. Many of our represented artists have been exhibited in established art institutions, and many have additionally had their work acquired by Canadian and international museum collections. At the heart of Han Modern & Contemporary’s numerous exhibitions, which unfold either in our own gallery space, other private galleries, fairs (Art Toronto, Palm Beach Modern and Contemporary, etc.), and art institutions, we curate acclaimed exhibitions that span the figurative and the conceptual. These exhibitions interweave fine art landscapes (such as Dorothy Knowles, Alex Cameron, Gregory Hardy, Graham Fowler), hyperrealism and realism (Luciano Ventrone, Tong Luo), Color Field artists (William Perehudoff, Paul Fournier), bold painterly, expressive abstractions (Kittie Bruneau, Andrew Lui), contemporary portraiture (Louis Boudreault) and ethereal bronze sculptures (Anne-Sophie Morelle).

Two Catherine Perehudoff paintings are sold 🔴! These two paintings "Trees by Rice Lake" and "Coastal Flowers" complete this bedroom by giving it a serene atmosphere! Her way of working is reminiscent of classic Impressionist paintings by Alfred Sisley and Georges Seurat with their light applications of paint to create three-dimensional forms on canvas, and a focus on the hazy effect of the atmosphere and light in the far distances of the paintings.
Congratulations to this collector!

Catherine’s paintings focus on the Canadian landscape, with a variety of nature scenes from either end of the Canadian coasts. Catherine’s paintings always have incredible detail, her large watercolour painting looks beautiful on the solo wall - allowing the collector to walk through the space with all the intricate brush marks which make up the grasses and leaves in the trees.💫 Beautiful works!

Congratulations to the collector of this 2018 painting by Andrew Lui, “Equinox III”, it looks perfect in this dining space! Mounted in a classic yet contemporary plexiglass frame, this work adds drama and movement with gestural brushwork depicting equestrian themes in black and white 👀

Featuring a restricted colour palette of only black and white, the modest and restrained use of colour creates an emphasis on the expressive brushwork and the simplistic chic framing. It's great to see Andrew’s work on the wall after a long time - his works activate any space through their playful and exciting imagery 💫

Sold🔴Congratulations to this collector! Incidences d’une trajectoire (1966) by Louis Jaque has found its new home in a contemporary dining space. With subtle tonal shifts of white, grey, and blue, the painting brings a modern presence to the interior. ✨

Completed in 1966, this work dates from a pivotal year in Jaque's career. That May and June, he was honoured with a solo exhibition at the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal. In the years that followed, he completed major public commissions, including monumental murals for Expo ’70 in Osaka and Maison de Radio-Canada in 1972, now installed at the Centre hospitalier de l’Université de Montréal (CHUM). 👀

The exhibition “All Day Long” brings together international artists from the 20th century to present day for a showcase on landscape and nature 🏞️. And notably, Dorothy’s painting is featured very closely to a work by American artist and art critic Clement Greenberg (green landscape featured on far right of the wall in the first image). Greenberg and Knowles initially met at the Emma Lake Workshops in the early 1960’s, where he would encourage Dorothy to paint landscapes - now both of their landscape work is on display together in the same space! 🙌✨

Installation for Art Dealers Association of Canada 60th anniversary partner showcase🥳! We love seeing Dorothy Knowles and Catherine Perehudoff’s work beside each other. 💫

👀Two works from the same lineage of family, with Catherine being the daughter of Dorothy Knowles. Over 40 years apart these works exemplify beauty in art and aesthetics over decades of time - one from the past, and one from the present.

🖼 Dorothy and Catherine would spend time in the 80's and 90's painting en plein air together, capturing the landscape through painting. It's great to see their works standing alongside eachother now 😍!

is hosting their 60th anniversary exhibition for partner galleries, and we are thrilled to have some of our pieces featured in this showcase which is happening in downtown Toronto next week, from June 11th - 14th at Bau-Xi Gallery! 🎨 👀
For ADAC's Pop-Up Exhibition, HMC is excited to present works that trace the evolution of Canadian art from the 1960s to the present.
🌊 “Shoreline, Emma Lake” (1965) by Dorothy Knowles highlights one of Western Canada’s most celebrated landscape painters and references the famed Emma Lake Workshops, where her encounter with critic Clement Greenberg in 1962 would profoundly influence her career.
💫Louis Jaque’s “Le signe de midi” (1966) reflects the rise of a Québécois artist whose innovative abstract paintings helped bring international recognition to Canadian art during the 1960s.
🏔️Representing a contemporary generation, Catherine Perehudoff, daughter of Dorothy Knowles and William Perehudoff, carries forward a remarkable artistic legacy. Her painting “The River Running Through Fraser Canyon” (2007) offers a fresh and awe-provoking interpretation of the Canadian landscape inspired by the natural beauty of the West coast.
Will you be attending the show? 👀 Make sure to catch a glimpse of this ephemeral exhibition before the show closes on the 14th! ✨
