This was once a river floodplain roamed by dinosaurs. 🦕

Northwestern Alberta hides a chapter of dinosaur evolution found almost nowhere else, the ram faced Pachyrhinosaurus, hadrosaurs by the herd, and an Edmontosaurus so well preserved it kept its skin and a fleshy crest we'd never seen before.

The fossils are still here, and you can see them up close.

Finding a 73 million year old dinosaur tooth. 🦴

This one belongs to a ceratopsian, a horned dinosaur, almost certainly Pachyrhinosaurus lakustai, the species this bonebed is famous for.

Ceratopsians were plant eaters, and a tooth like this was one of hundreds packed into their jaws. They wore down and replaced their teeth constantly, grinding through the tough vegetation of Cretaceous Alberta.

It was found at the Pipestone Creek Bonebed, one of the densest dinosaur bonebeds in North America. 73 million years ago, an entire herd of Pachyrhinosaurus died here together in an ancient flood, leaving behind a layer of bone so rich it's still being excavated today.

In Palaeontologist for a Day, you will dig at this site alongside our palaeontologists, hike through the river of death and have an exclusive behind the scenes tour of the Philip J. Currie Dinosaur Museum fossil lab.
