Curated Pick of the Week

Bold, curious, and impossible to overlook.

This week's Curated Pick is "Gingham" by Ontario artist Laura Stevens. 🦌

Set against a bright, open background, this striking deer portrait combines recognizable form with expressive, abstract brushwork. Natural earth tones are broken up by unexpected flashes of blue, turquoise, coral, and gold, while sweeping lines and layered shapes give the composition a wonderful sense of movement.

And then there's that face. 👀

While much of "Gingham" is loose and expressive, Laura brings greater definition to the deer's eyes and muzzle, creating a focal point that seems to look straight back at the viewer. The result is a contemporary wildlife portrait that's full of both character and energy.

August 31st (Monday) Perfect Pairings

Today is National Matchmaker Day, but a perfect match doesn't always have to mean romance.

Sometimes it's someone to share a branch with, someone to chase through the snow, a friend to run beside, or family to walk home with. And sometimes it's simply finding the perfect place to say “I do.”

From companionship and family to friendship and love, today's Canadian collection celebrates the pairs—and places—that bring us together. ❤️🍁

After all, some things are simply better together.

ART 101 | What Does “Mixed Media” Actually Mean?

You’ve probably seen “mixed media” written on a gallery label—but what exactly is the medium?

The answer is: there isn’t just one!

Mixed media simply means that an artist has intentionally combined more than one artistic material or medium within a single work. Rather than working exclusively in acrylic, oil, watercolour, or another medium, the artist brings different materials together to create the finished piece.

That could mean combining acrylic paint with ink, charcoal, pastel, collage, graphite, texture mediums—or any number of other materials. The possibilities are nearly endless, and every artist can approach mixed media differently.

Why mix them? 🖌️

Different materials behave in different ways. One might provide bold colour, another fine lines, another physical texture or transparency. Combining them gives artists even more ways to build depth, create interesting surfaces, introduce unexpected details, and develop their own distinctive style.

So the next time you see “mixed media” on a gallery label, don't think of it as one particular type of art.

Think of it as a clue: there's more than one thing happening on that surface!

🔎 Hidden Details | Artist of the Month

Sometimes, the smallest details deserve a closer look.

This month, we're featuring Crystal Rassi as our Artist of the Month—and today, we're getting a little closer to their work. 👀
Take a look at this detail from "Summer Breeze." Up close, you can see details that can easily disappear when viewing the painting as a whole.

It's a reminder that there's often more to a painting than what we notice at first glance. Sometimes, it's worth getting a little closer. 🎨

🎨 Curated Pick of the Week

A sunset doesn’t always have to fill the sky to steal the show. 🌅

This week’s Curated Pick is Songs of Sunset by Lori Meeboer, a vibrant interpretation of the Canadian landscape where bold lines, simplified forms, and unexpected colour transform a quiet lakeside scene.

Touches of soft pink and warm coral weave their way through the cool blues, greens, and purples of the forest, capturing those fleeting moments when the last light of the day begins to settle across the landscape.

With its rhythmic shapes and striking contrast, Songs of Sunset feels both familiar and wonderfully stylized—a colourful celebration of the rocks, water, and windswept trees of the Canadian wilderness.

🍁 The Last Days of a Canadian Summer

There’s something special about late August.

The days are still warm, the lake is still calling, and there’s plenty of summer left to enjoy—but every now and then, there’s a little reminder that another season is waiting just around the corner. 🌲☀️

It’s the time for one more afternoon at the beach, one more paddle across the lake, one more evening on the dock, and one more chance to soak up those long summer days before they begin to shorten.

Canadian summers may never feel quite long enough, but perhaps that's part of what makes them so special.

Here’s to enjoying every last bit of summer while it’s still here.
