We are looking forward to welcoming renowned BC historian Richard Mackie at Wentworth Villa tomorrow evening for a talk about his historic family home!

Mackie will explore the tenure, architecture, and inhabitants of a house on Tsehum Harbour in North Saanich known as Mahara Woodlands — Mahara being a Maori word meaning “memory” or “recollection.” The four owners include the daughter of an English baronet, a silent film actor, a decorated captain of the North Atlantic run, and an eminent zoologist. Mackie, who has made contact with all four families, shares their remarkable stories that were enacted, sometimes literally, on the stage of Mahara Woodlands.

The Victoria Design Festival is in full swing and our pop-up exhibit about the furniture of mid-20th C architect and designer Peter Cotton is up and running! Come and visit us in the beautiful ground level of Open Space Gallery at 510 Fort Street (which Cotton himself renovated in the 1970s!) between 11 and 4 today and tomorrow.

Also, to learn more about Cotton, don't forget to come to Wentworth Villa on Sunday at 10:30 to hear architecture and design historians Ben Clinton-Baker and Allan Collier talk about his inspiring life and career!

We are thrilled to be celebrating the life and work of architect and designer Peter Cotton (1918-78) as part of this year's Victoria Design Festival!

Cotton was both a cutting edge modernist and a staunch advocate for heritage conservation in post-WW2 Victoria. Join us from May 1-3 as we share some examples of his work as a modern furniture designer within the contexts of a unique heritage building (510 Fort Street) which he helped to renovate in the 1970s. We will also be offering insights into Cotton's wider career through a panel discussion on Sunday May 3rd at Wentworth Villa.

You can read more about these free drop-in offerings through the Design Victoria website here https://www.designvictoria.ca/events/the-furniture-of-peter-neve-cotton and here https://www.designvictoria.ca/events/peter-cotton-a-life-in-design

Join us next Wednesday, April 15th, for a rare glimpse into the personal home of one of the foremost architects of the Arts and Crafts movement in Victoria: Hubert Savage. Former Saanich Councillor David Cubberley lived in and restored the house over a period of 35 years and will walk us through some of his experiences and what he learned in the process.
