Roedde House Museum

Roedde House Museum A Victorian house museum which offers self-guided tours, educational programming, rentals, and event Roedde House is owned by the City of Vancouver.

Roedde House Museum, in Vancouver's West End, is a uniquely restored late-Victorian home in the Queen Anne revival style. Built in 1893 for the family of Gustav Roedde, one of Vancouver’s first bookbinders, it has been faithfully restored to reflect the day-to-day life of the Roedde family at the turn of the last century. It was its 1976 designation by the City as a heritage house that was a catal

yst for the restoration and development of the entire Barclay Heritage Square. This was a monumental undertaking, involving many dedicated groups and individuals, including the citizens of the residential West End neighbourhood. The Museum offers a unique experience for visitors: unlike many heritage houses, the rooms are not roped off or behind glass, and some of the artefacts may be handled with care. Each of the eleven rooms has been furnished with artefacts and period items, which were collected over the years, some returned by the Roedde family. Experienced docents will be happy to share their knowledge and stories with you.

Before Vancouver became the city we know today, a young Filipino seaman named Benson Flores arrived in British Columbia in 1861, making him one of the earliest recorded Filipino immigrants in Canada.

Settling on Bowen Island, Flores became known as a fisherman, boat renter, beachcomber, musician, and a generous friend to the community. He helped shape daily life along the coast during a time when Canada itself was still evolving.

Though little is known about his early life, stories from neighbours remembered “Old Ben” as someone who shared what he had, welcomed others warmly, and became a familiar figure in Bowen Island history.

Benson Flores’s story is a reminder that Filipino Canadians have long been part of the fabric of British Columbia, contributing to communities, culture, and local history for generations, even when their stories were often overlooked.

As we continue to celebrate and preserve diverse histories, his legacy lives on through the stories, archives, and memories that connect us to Vancouver’s multicultural past. 💙

Roedde House Museum - Vancouver, BC

"For a glimpse of what the West End looked like before the apartment blocks, visit this handsome 1893 Queen Anne–style mansion, now a lovingly preserved museum. Designed by infamous architect Francis Rattenbury, the yesteryear, antique-studded rooms have a lived-in feel while its guided tour (included with admission) tells you all about its middle-class Roedde family residents. Look out for the cylinder record player, 250-year-old grandfather clock and the taxidermied deer heads that were hunted in Stanley Park in 1906.
This is also one of Vancouver's most evocative live music venues, staging regular jazz or classical concerts (tickets $15) in its downstairs rooms. The home is in Barclay Heritage Square, a one-block site containing nine historic West End houses dating from 1890 to 1908."

On June 11, we are showcasing a musical and literary performance produced by local writer and producer, Norah Ashmore, which takes you on a journey from the dirty thirties in Vancouver to a boom town in BC’s interior mountains.

Mountain Girls: From Barclay Street to Bralorne is based on real life events and reimagined by Norah Ashmore, featuring jazz vocalist Laura Crema and pianist Sharon Minemoto.

Synopsis: During the 1930’s many people were struggling. In the city of Vancouver rooming houses were one of the ways to survive a depression in the economy & Roedde House was one of these. The women who lived here were artists, musicians, writers, teachers and secretaries. They organized book discussions and political actions to improve lives for women. Many amazing women you will come to know more about came through Roedde House, living in the West End and walking these same streets we now enjoy. The times were difficult and new opportunities beckoned, in the mountains and mining towns of Pioneer and Bralorne. Jobs and new adventures drew the women to risk new lives. These are some of their stories.”

Find tickets here 🎫 : https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/mountain-girls-from-barclay-st-to-bralorne-tickets-1989127316349?aff=oddtdtcreator

Tea & cookies will be served after the event.
