As Oakridge enters a new chapter, it's worth remembering the generations of Jewish families and community builders who helped shape this remarkable neighbourhood.

Long before today's redevelopment, Oakridge became one of the centres of Jewish life in British Columbia. Today, it continues to serve our community through the Jewish Community Centre, schools, synagogues, seniors' residences, and countless organizations that call the Oak Street corridor home.

Our latest Our Stories feature explores the memories, photographs, and oral histories that capture this important chapter in Vancouver's Jewish history—and its continuing legacy.

Today, we're proud to launch the Jewish Museum & Archives of BC's 2026 Annual Campaign:

Preserving Our Stories. Connecting Our Future.

For more than 50 years, JMABC has preserved the people, places, and moments that have shaped Jewish life across British Columbia. This campaign will help us continue that work through archival preservation, oral history projects, exhibitions, educational programming, digitization, and province-wide community partnerships.

But this campaign is about more than preserving history.

It's about ensuring that future generations can discover where they came from, understand the communities that helped build British Columbia, and appreciate the enduring contributions of Jewish British Columbians.

Over the coming weeks we'll share stories from our collections, introduce new projects, celebrate our supporters, and highlight the many ways our community is helping build tomorrow's archives.

Because every story we preserve today becomes a gift to the future.

☔️ What a wonderfully Vancouver way to begin our 2026 Jewish Walking Tour season!

Today we welcomed a fantastic group for our first Walking Tour of Jewish Strathcona. The rain came down, the umbrellas went up, and together we explored the stories, people, businesses, and institutions that shaped Vancouver's first Jewish neighbourhood.

Despite the downpour, spirits remained high, conversations were lively, and the history was as fascinating as ever. Sometimes the best museum experiences happen outside the museum walls—and sometimes in the rain.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for a memorable morning.

This is an execution-focused role for someone who is organized, thoughtful, collaborative, and passionate about sharing Jewish history and community stories in British Columbia.

The Programs Manager will support public programs including exhibits, walking tours, educational programming, talks, digital content, publications, and community partnerships.

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS: The Canadian Jewish Life Writing Project

The Canadian Jewish future wants your stories!

From now through October 30, the Association for Canadian Jewish Studies is inviting submissions for the inaugural edition of the annual Canadian Jewish Life Writing Project, a national initiative dedicated to collecting, preserving, and sharing the personal stories of Jewish life in Canada.

This year’s theme, “Growing Up Jewish in Canada,” calls for short, previously unpublished autobiographical essays that reflect on childhood, adolescence, and coming of age through the intertwined lenses of Jewish and Canadian identity. Writers are encouraged to explore family histories, communities, schools, camps, friendships, migrations, celebrations, struggles, and the moments that shaped who they became.

Your stories will be housed in a permanent public collection at the Alex Dworkin Canadian Jewish Archives, as well as a digital repository hosted by the ACJS, ensuring that the richness and diversity of Canadian Jewish experience is archived for future generations. The top three submissions, as selected by our advisory board, will be featured prominently on the ACJS website and recognized at a spring 2027 launch event.

Submissions are open until Oct. 30, 2026!
