ARTIST SPOTLIGHT

Christer Myrberg is a ceramicist whose work has been deeply moulded by his experiences in Japan, Korea, and beyond. His journey begins with Mashiko-yaki, specifically exploring Tsukamoto pottery, a rustic, handmade ceramic style derived from Mashiko, Japan, known for its earthy glazes and simple, functional forms. From there, Myrberg immersed himself in more traditional techniques, working as an apprentice in various kilns, including Satsuma-yaki, known for its thick, crackled glazes coating intricate designs, and Tsuboya-yaki, which features folk-inspired forms with rich, layered glazes. His exploration of Korean and Chinese ceramics, particularly Goryeo celadons and Song dynasty pieces, strongly influences his style of crafting large pots that transcend functionality to emphasize beauty and craftsmanship.

From March 20-30 Chryster’s work will be showcased at Hong Collective in “Full of Purpose: The Weight & Beauty of Mingei”. Don’t miss this compelling exploration of craft, tradition and artistry.

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT

Suzy Birstein’s sculptures and paintings are self portraits, embracing a lineage between past women and goddesses contained within her present self. They compound excess as she channels an infusion of female powerhouses, including Frida Kahlo, Athena, Carmen Miranda and Alice in Wonderland.

Suzy is fascinated by the power of creativity and beauty to heal adversity, across time and place.

As an honours graduate from Emily Carr University, Suzy draws inspiration from music, dance, costume, art history and travel. She travels extensively in North America, Europe, and Cambodia, attending and leading master workshops and exhibits, exploring ancient sites and all that is enchanting.

Suzy’s art has been commissioned, published, exhibited, and collected across Canada, United States, Mexico, Europe, Australia and Japan.
