Ayako Rokkaku
2026
Acrylic on canvas

(b. 1982, Chiba, Japan) lives and works between Berlin, Porto, and Tokyo. Known internationally for her instinctive and performative approach, Rokkaku paints directly with her bare hands, using her fingers to spread and shape acrylic paint across the canvas. This distinctive technique lends her work an immediate sense of movement, intimacy, and spontaneity, while underscoring the physical relationship between body, gesture, and image. Moving fluidly between abstraction and figuration, her vibrant paintings draw from kawaii culture, abstract expressionism, and the boundless imagination of childhood, often unfolding as fantastical worlds populated by drifting forms and imagined beings.

This work was created during a live painting session at the opening reception of “Trails of Life in the Air”. Over the course of three hours, Rokkaku worked in a state of focused and uninterrupted concentration, as the imagery gradually evolved. Employing her distinctive finger-painting technique, the artist engaged the canvas through touch and movement, allowing the work to unfold intuitively in real time. The audience was invited to witness this process, an immediate and embodied form of making that lies at the core of her practice.

How does it feel to be pulled in two directions?

In this ongoing series, the artist expresses the ideas of impermanence, identity, and belonging from the perspective of a first-generation immigrant - a life bisected and marked by perpetual homesickness.

James Lee Chiahan () is a self-taught Taiwanese-Canadian artist based in Montreal. His work has been commissioned in editorial and commercial contexts for clients like Apple, The Atlantic, The New Yorker, and The Walrus. His work has been recognized by the Society of Illustrators and American Illustration.

In recent years, he has created several murals in both public and private settings. His work is held in private collections around the world and has been exhibited in Canada and the United States.

Pink Butt/ Wet Dream of The City
Karis Huang
2023
Oil on Wood

The scene ultimately reveals how the neighborhood becomes a shifting mirror, reflecting not its own memories but the dreams imposed upon it, blurring the boundary between presence and performance. This piece began with a pink vintage Cadillac the artist found glowing under a lone streetlight in Chinatown, its glossy curves shimmering like a soft, impossible mirage. The car felt almost theatrical—an outsider’s fantasy staged against the everyday rhythms of the neighborhood. Its exaggerated “pink butt” exposed how Chinatown often becomes a screen for desire, nostalgia, and myth, absorbing images that were never its own. Yet the scene also revealed a quieter tension: the way real histories are overshadowed by what others want to see. Reflected neon signs ripple across the Cadillac’s surface, blending spectacle with displacement. The scene ultimately reveals how the Cadillac becomes a symbol of projected narratives, challenging us to reconsider how the neighborhood is framed, filtered, and endlessly rewritten by outside imaginations.

Study For Break
Karis Huang
2025
Oil on Canvas

This work is rooted in a blue-and-white porcelain cup the artist bought in Jingdezhen. She used it to drink wine, and one time accidentally broke it. The destruction of precious things feels like an internal curse, tied to a lasting current of anger and melancholy.

Karis Wong (Baoyi Huang, b. 1998, Shenzhen) () is a New York–based artist working primarily in oil painting, where desire, intimacy, and commodity imagery blur into one surreal surface. She received her BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and is currently pursuing an MFA at Parsons School of Design. Her work draws from personal photographs, online images, and objects encountered in her daily movements through the city—souvenirs of dislocation, melancholy, and temporary fantasies.

Gateway
Xiangmei Su
2024
Liusu thread, wood and Acrylic Sheet

Gateway is a site-specific installation reflecting the artist’s lived experience of migration and cultural translation between China and Canada. Rooted in her connection to Greater Vancouver as a second home, the work invites viewers to move through layers of time, memory, and space.

The installation consists of five symbolic “doors,” each composed of thousands of traditional liusu (tassels) from the artist’s hometown of Suzhou. Once handcrafted ornaments reserved for the elite, liusu here function as both material and metaphor, linking past and present, East and West, and the visible with the invisible. The colours reference the Five Elements of Chinese cosmology, while the door shapes are cut from the city maps of Greater Vancouver, West Vancouver, and Suzhou, alongside forms inspired by Suzhou’s classical garden gates. This structure resonates with Vancouver’s Chinatown, where a Suzhou-style classical garden embeds Chinese spatial traditions within the contemporary city. Conceived as a shared passage, Gateway invites viewers to cross cultural thresholds and encounter a space where personal memory, public space, and cultural reinvention converge.

Xiangmei Su (b. China) () is a Vancouver-based visual artist whose multidisciplinary practice spans installation, photography, video, painting, and drawing. Her work explores themes of cultural identity, memory, and belonging through materials that bridge personal history and collective experience. A graduate of the University of British Columbia’s Visual Arts program, Su has exhibited widely across Canada and China, with recent solo exhibitions at Canton Sardine (2024), Lipont Art Gallery (2023), and Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden (2022).
