Rev James AS J Dowling (1850–1909)

Dowling is known famously around the town of Uxbridge for his art, known as the Dowling scrolls.

Dowling worked at the Uxbridge Baptist church, which is still standing today!

During this time he created the scrolls. They were painted behind the church in a shed. The scrolls being 7 feet high and 446 feet in length!

The art depicting scenes from the bible. This art is over 130 years old and still bright in colour to this day!

These scrolls are occasionally brought out but not often because of its age and how much room and effort it takes to be brought out and displayed!

Thank you so much to our Friends at the Uxbridge Horticulture Society for all their effort in taking care of our herb garden.

They have put so much effort into helping us maintain the garden, from replacing and fixing our beds and bringing in new types of Herbs to helping us host our Herb harvest event they are truly the best partners we could ask for. Thank you again to the Horticulture society and stay tuned for an announcement on a upcoming event involving the herb garden.

Here is brief description of each of our Artifacts!

- Our Large Pencil was used to advertise a graphite company. It used to hang outside the old Times Journal office on Brock Street. On the pencil is printed "L. & C. Haridtmuth, Vienna, Graphite Company, H.P."

- The Gavel is inscribed with the names of Spring Water Days chairmen from 1977-1982; Ed Evans, Mary Hogg, Harry Stemp, and Keith Paradine.

- The Centennial Torch was run from Ottawa to Uxbridge in 1972 during the town's Centennial Marathon celebrations.

- This Sword was owned by Hon. Lt-Col. Sam Sharpe MP, who formed the 116th Battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Force in Uxbridge.

- This Bat was used by the DNT Champions for the Uxbridge tournament in 1972.


- The Police Sign was used to give directions to the old Uxbridge Police Station.

- This Croquet Mallet is one of a set of Ten.

- This Cane was presented to Frank Madill, an MP in the Canadian House of Commons, as a token of respect and esteem from his friends in the House.

Joseph Gould (December 29, 1808 – January 29, 1886)

Joseph was born and raised in Uxbridge as a quaker. Gould took part in the Upper Canada Rebellion. He was captured and sentenced to be exiled but it was reduced to just 9 months in prison.

After he was released he went back to his farm and started owning more land; mills, factories and was the operator of many roads. Gould then became the first reeve of Uxbridge and the first warden for the Ontario county.

Once Gould had left politics he had gone to helping out his community in any way he can. Building churches and a primary school.

Gould sadly passed away in Uxbridge in 1886.

If the windows could talk...

These windows have been with the School house since the day it was built in 1924!

Being on these grounds for over 100 years.

Seeing people come in and out, decades passing of educating, sheltering and giving a place for students to grow up.

One can only wonder the stories they hold...

David Milne (January 8, 1882 – December 26, 1953)

David was born in southern Ontario near Paisley. He was accompanied by his 9 siblings. David went to high school in Walkerton and found a liking for art. He studied it through school and eventually moved to New York City in 1903 when he was just 21. From then, Milne followed through with his passions. Sadly Milne had suffered a stroke and continued to until his passing. Milne is remembered and his art is celebrated to this day.
