🥰It's no surprise that Volunteer & Tourism week run at the same time because in rural regions like ours, the two go hand in hand.

Volunteers are the ones opening doors, organizing events, welcoming visitors, and keeping places alive long after the busy season ends. And without visitors to leave money behind to help us pay for community services, those same places would struggle to keep going.

The photo I’m sharing today highlights four Southern Avalon volunteers recognized this past November for their longstanding community service. Nominated by their municipal councils for a Community Sector Council Newfoundland and Labrador Volunteer Award, here are the honourees (in order of appearance):

• Ricky Myrick – St. Shotts
• Josephine Waddleton – Trepassey
• Frances Fleming – St. Vincent’s–St. Stephen’s–Peter’s River
• Clarence Molloy – Portugal Cove South

This is a small snapshot of the MANY people across the region who show up, give their time, and keep their communities moving.

They're the reasons the lights stay on and we appreciate them all.

🍀🔁 Linking the Loop is a regional listening journey led by our Irish Loop Community Builders, who were trained through an ECHO grant in Trepassey last fall.

🙏 This work on tourism development has been supported by the ECHO board since 2023, with our Executive Director stepping in as the project lead in the summer of 2025. The Irish Loop Regional Tourism project is being supported under the guidance of CBDC Celtic and a Steering Committee.

🫶 Strong conversations are happening across the region as communities help shape the future of tourism on the Irish Loop under this citizen led pilot project through Tourism Atlantic.

👏 Help the community of Portugal Cove South celebrate this weekend in the church that is now their own thanks to the generosity of an angel donation. What a beautiful example on the results that come with the perseverance of community spirit. Well done to all who made this happen!
