Happy Pride Month! 🏳️‍🌈

Pride Month is an annual celebration of how far LGBTQIA+ rights have come, and the work still left to do. This month reminds us to reflect on the fluidity of our world and how we can use lenses, such as q***r ecology, to examine our natural world from a unique and less-rigid perspective.

But why is Pride Month important?

Pride Month is so important because it’s a time for us all to reflect on the ongoing struggles that affect the LGBTQIA+ community and how this affects all of us. It serves as a reminder of the perseverance and resilience of q***r communities. We see how far our world has come and the ways in which we still need to work to improve the lives of and advocate for acceptance of marginalized communities.

What is Q***r Ecology and why does it matter?

Q***r Ecology is a field of study that focuses on questioning heteronormative assumptions in our scientific research! It’s important that we don’t make assumptions about scientific research based on what we deem to be “normal”. Same-sex pairings and relationships are incredibly common in many different ecosystems, yet due to our own biases, we may overlook and completely misunderstand what's truly going on in the world around us. It also helps challenge the thought that homosexuality is “unnatural” as we see it frequently in different ways in our natural world!

As May comes to a close, we'd like to extend a big THANK YOU to everyone who came by and supported us during May is Museum Month and for your continued support of our museum! We would love to hear about how you celebrated May is Museum Month and share how museums have shaped your understanding of local history recently below!

The Quinte Museum of Natural History would like to also take this time to acknowledge and thank all of the local organizations that support us at the museum. Loans from places like the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto, the Ontario Ministry of Energy and Mines and the Ontario Geological Survey in Tweed allow us to showcase so many interesting specimens we otherwise would not have access to, being a small museum. To every person or organization that's helped our museum thrive, we thank you!

If your kids just want to play games in their rooms this PA day, bring them to our museum to give our SALIX game a try! This fantastic, open-world game was created for our Expedition Alert exhibit by our incredible student partners at Loyalist College. It let's you explore around Alert, Nunavut through the eyes of an Arctic hare and learn about wildlife research and ecology along the way!

We hope you stop by and check it out! We are open 10am - 5pm.

We are still looking for feedback in our Museum Expansion Survey! This survey will close on June 12th so we are seeking as many responses as possible until then. Take 7 minutes and help the Quinte Museum of Natural History plan our next chapter 🌿🔬🦕

We want to hear from you! 🎤

In partnership with Loyalist College’s Center for Healthy Communities, we are asking for feedback from you on a potential museum expansion project. We need members of our community to fill out a short survey (it should take about 7 minutes) to help us gauge interest in a larger museum, and input on what future offerings people would be most interested in. Your feedback will directly affect our next phase at the museum, so let your opinions be heard!

Take 7 minutes and help shape the future of your museum. Click here to participate: https://www.surveymonkey.ca/r/HT82VW2

Our Education team and Social team sometimes want to convey their enthusiasm for our specimens in different ways... but we can all agree the Museum is pretty cool right now 😎❄️✨

Let's jump back into our discussion on Arctic foxes! ❄️ Could you tell they're one of Finn's favourites? Thanks to the hard work of our partners, the research students from the Université du Québec à Rimouski studying Alert's wildlife, we have more trail camera footage of these fiesty little guys than almost any other animal, and we couldn't wait to share it with all of you.

Kinda makes you want to learn more and help out, right? We hope you'll check out these links to documentaries, papers, and symbolic adoption programs to find out even more frosty facts:
